Fred Brownell Obituary

Fred P. Brownell passed away June 30, 2007, at his home with his family by his side. He died after a long illness.

Fred was born on Dec. 27, 1923, in Los Angeles. He grew up in Glendora, Calif., and attended Citrus High School where he was a pitcher for the baseball team and was also on the basketball team. He served three years in World War II in the Army Signal Corps in Italy and North Africa and has enjoyed attending reunions with this small close-knit group of comrades through the years. He has always been interested in radio and communications and has had an amateur license for 60 years.

Fred received his bachelor's degree in 1954, and his master's degree in 1960 in electrical engineering from Utah State University. He developed antennas for the Titan missile and other weapons programs and became an expert in anechoic chambers, designing and testing many chambers from Point Mugu to Cape Canaveral and in Japan. As his career and family grew, he called many places home and lived in Camarillo for 36 years. He will be missed by friends around the United States.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara; three children, Kathleen Kern, Steve Brownell, and Scott Brownell; granddaughter, Kristine Lauren; and his brother Robert.

He was pre-deceased by his daughter Kristine Susan; and his brother Dr. James Brownell.

Friends may donate in his memory to St. Columba's Episcopal Church, where he was a member and had served as junior and senior warden, or to the Camarillo Hospice Group who helped him so much in his last days.

His memorial service was held June 3, at St. Columba's Episcopal Church, and his ashes will be inurned in the church columbarium.

Dear Barbara,
I'm sorry to learn of Fred's passing. My sister and I remember you both, from our days in Glendora and all of those wonderful festivities at the Riser ranch. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Barbara,
So sad to hear of Fred's passing. I worked for him at Rantec for five years in the 70's. He was a wonderful Christian man and I have no doubt that he is with our Savior and Lord. He is one person that I always admired for his smile and easy way of living life. Work was secondary, people were always first. Christ be with you until the day we are all united.
