EUGENE DICKERSON Obituary


Eugene H. Dickerson
Known to most as Gene, passed away at Georgetown University Hospital on Saturday, December 16, 2017 after a long battle with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. He is survived by his partner Ken Plonsky and his brother James. There will be a "Celebration of Life" on January 7, 2018 which would have been Gene's 60th birthday. That's from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Van Ness North apartments in the "Van Ness Room." The address is 3001 Veazey Terrace NW Washington, DC, just two blocks from the Van Ness metro stop on the red line. There is parking at the Giant Gene was a librarian. Gene joined the Bunche Library staff at State Dept. in 2006 as the Cataloging Team Leader. From 1996 through 2006 he served as a Unit Head for the National Library of Medicine. Gene was serials librarian with Villanova University Library from 1986 to 1996. He received his MLS from Rutgers in 1982. Gene was born in Trenton. He did his undergraduate at Rider University where he had first Library job. His first librarian job was at University of Delaware 1983-1986.He was active in ALA (American Library Association) where he is the former chair and a current member of the Continuing Resources Cataloging Committee, formerly known as the Committee to Study Serials Cataloging. Gene has been an adjunct trainer for PALINET for many years, and has taught workshops for both OCLC (Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program) CAPCON and FEDLINK. He has taught SCCTP workshops in Basic Serials Cataloging and in Cataloging Electronic Serials. Gene's great cataloging skills, high productivity, and systems insight will be sorely missed. He always stayed current with changes and innovations in our profession. Few people were as dedicated to Librarianship.

I am leaving a belated post as I have only just found out about Egene's death just now as I am planning to relocate back to New Jersey after the death of my husband of twenty years. Though I felt something was happening because of loosing all touch, I chalked it up to his finding a fulfilling life in Hawaii. I knew Eugene from approximately 1975 through 1979 which was also during his tenure as Vice President of Dignity Princeton. I was the Jewish participant in the non-Catholic pew. I was there when Eugene was the only person I ever knew who loathed student teaching. I helped him refocus back into library science while I was attending Bucks County Community College. I will also never forget the warmth and affection I received from both of Eugene's parents who I continued to meet throughout the years. I will be returning to Lawrenceville New Jersey in mid-October. This news makes me infinitely sad as it means I have survived all the long term relationships I know of and two husbands. I knew Gene through ALCTS, SCCTP and NASIG. I always enjoyed talking to him at conferences and appreciated his wry sense of humor. He was excellent at delivering the "Worst Serial Title Changes" awards back in the day. He had a wonderful deadpan delivery as the library community poked fun at what we tongue-in-cheek called "silly and unnecessary title changes." I will miss Gene. My deepest sympathies to Gene's family and friends.

Gene was a marvelous cataloger, teacher, and most especially, person. He was my CONSER mentor for a few years and always provided with the help that I needed. At professional meetings, we always managed to spend time with each other. I greatly appreciated Gene. My sincerest condolences to his partner and family.
