GILES HARLOW Obituary


HARLOW GILES D. HARLOW, JR. Giles D. Harlow, Jr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Walter Reed National Medical Center. He passed away from complications from Parkinson's Disease.Giles Harlow was born in 1932 in Wadena, Minnesota to Giles and Ella Johnson Harlow. He spent most of his early childhood in Park Rapids, Minnesota and graduated from High School in Worthington, Minnesota where he was a standout athlete, musician and scholar.He attended the University of Minnesota where his National Guard unit was activated for service in Korea. Upon completion of his service in Korea he accept- ed an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, proudly graduating with the class of 1957. As a cadet he was active in the cadet chapel choir and cadet director of the glee club. He later was awarded Masters Degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA.His distinguished military career spanned 30 years including two combat tours in Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart after being shot down over North Vietnam in 1968 and also commanded a squadron. He went on to teach Political Science at the United States Air Force Academy, graduated from the National War College, worked in strategic arms reduction at the Pentagon, was the Director of Operations and Vice Wing Commander at Bergstrom AFB and the Wing Commander at Vance AFB.He spent his post military life traveling the world with wife of 55 years Ann (Quackenbush), indulging in his love of carpentry and fly fishing.His greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, four children Giles D. Harlow (Jennifer), Douglas (Julie), Elizabeth (Frank), Sarah (Todd) and his beloved grandchildren Margaret, Adrienne, Hannah, Sarah, Matthew, Daniel and Giles. He is also survived by his brother John (Janet) and sister Nancy, and extended family.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 24 at 2 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in McLean, Virginia with interment in summer 2013 in Claryville, New York. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, Inc.ed an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, proudly graduating with the class of 1957. It was an honor as a student pilot to fly with Colonel Harlow. He was our Wing Commander and I was fortunate to fly with him four times. I remember how he lifted me up telling me that if I saw the need to eject, I was to make the call and he would go first. I was a 2nd Lt and he was a Colonel. It was always a pleasure to fly with him but you sure made sure you were ready. Haha. He was an integral part of my career in the Air Force and Delta Air Lines. I hold such fine memories of him.
