GUY WATKINS Obituary


WATKINS G. HANSEN WATKINS 1924 - 2012 Guy Hansen Watkins, 87, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2012. He was the devoted and cherished husband of Sherry Watkins; beloved father of Peter Watkins (husband of Anne Holzman), Sara Watkins (wife of David Sears), Timothy Hansen Watkins (partner of Todd Gambill) and Susan Watkins (partner of Jan Deardorff); beloved stepfather of Craig Kapfer (husband of Rebekah Hilger Kapfer); and much loved and loving grandfather of Amanda Watkins, Billy Watkins, and Thomas Watkins. Hansen was born in Washington, D.C. on September 30, 1924 to the late Rachel (Hansen) and A. Guy Watkins. He attended Richard Montgomery High School and the University of Maryland. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Hansen's distinguished business career included operating Rockville's first appliance and electronics store, the A.G. Watkins Company. He was also a talented auctioneer and a bail bondsman. He was a founding partner of the HBW Group, a successful Rockville, Maryland-based commercial real estate firm. Hansen had a love of all things horses throughout his life. He served as Master of Fox Hounds of the Goshen Hunt Club (Maryland) for many years and was active in the United States Pony Clubs. He was passionate about watching foxhounds work and steeplechase racing. As a lifetime member of Lions Club International, he was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Service, and was active in the Rockville chapter. As a longtime member of The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew's in Silver Spring, Maryland, he served in various leadership positions including President of the Church Council. In recent years he was a respected member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Great Falls, Virginia. There will be a memorial service at The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew's located at 15300 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland at 2 p.m. on July 13, 2012, with visitation of friends and family at 1 p.m. before the service. The family will welcome all at a reception celebrating Hansen's life at Manor Country Club following the service. Hansen will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery on a later date. Hansen requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Rockville Lions Foundation, P.O. Box 1252, Rockville, Maryland 20849-1252.
