JEAN FOURCROY Obituary

JEAN L. FOURCROY, MD, PhD, MPH  June 16, 1930 - October 12, 2016
Dr Fourcroy of Bethesda, MD died of frontotemporal dementia at Copper Ridge in Sykesville, MD, where she had been warmly cared for over the past year. As the fifth woman to be certified as a urologist in the US, Dr Fourcroy was a pioneer in mentoring women entering the field of medicine and founded the Society of Women in Urology in 1980, which now has 650 members, including over 250 who are board certified urologists.  With four adolescent children, Dr. Fourcroy earned her Bachelors degree at age 34 and entered medical school at Medical College of Pennsylvania at age 42, having completed her PhD in Anatomy from University of California, San Francisco. She then had a long career in clinical practice, teaching, research and regulatory work. She was a Captain at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, served on the faculty at Rutgers University Medical Center, reviewed drug and device applications at the Food and Drug Administration and was on the board of the US Anti-Doping Agency. Her scientific specialties included male and female fertility and performance enhancing drugs. She published numerous articles and edited the book "Pharmacology, Doping and Sports". Illness ended her career at 82. Dr. Fourcroy was president of the American Medical Women's Association in 1995 and held leadership positions in many professional associations, including Medical Women's International, The American Andrology Society, The Society for the Study of Reproduction and The Washington Academy of Medicine. She received the Presidential Citation Award from the American Urological Association in 1998 and was named 1996 Woman of the Year by the Women's Medical Association of New York City. Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Armin Behr; daughter Margarite Fourcroy (Daniel Howes); sons John Fourcroy (Cathy), Antone Fourcroy (Kathy) and Michel Fourcroy; and grandchildren Matthew, Daniel, Emily, Isabelle and Grant.  A Memorial Service will be held at the Cosmos Club, 2121 Massachusetts Ave., NW on January 28, 2017 at 2 p.m. Those planning to attend, shoudl contact:[email protected]

Jean was an inspiration to us all, quietly nurturing us during our early careers and facilitating networking not only informally, but through the establishment of the Society for Women in Urology which, for many of us, gave us our own special space within the greater urologic community. It would always be a source of support when we were beset by the good ol' boys club that Urology has traditionally been.
Jean was also amazing because she was a real Renaissance woman, always adopting new hobbies, learning them from scratch and adding her own unique twist to what she did. Those hands always had to be busy!
I will miss Jean a great deal. She was always there for all of us.

Jean had a turtle she kept in the welled area outside her family room and he/she is still there with Armin caring for her. I was lucky enough to live close enough to come to Jean's home for many meetings. Jean tried her best to keep interest flowing for the DC chapter by sending out a newsletter with local tidbits. She will be missed for her persistence, creativity, scientific abilities, leadership, humor, friendship, and organization. May she rest in peace.

Jean was a great doctor - combining curiosity, brilliance and determination. She was a great leader - opening her home up to students, mentoring so many other physicians, taking a stand for women, women physicians and women's health. And, like the icing on the cake, she was an artist, making music with a hammered dulcimer and creating lovely little watercolors. Jean was tough and said what she thought, but backed it by bringing many resources to the table. I'm glad I lived close enough to be in Branch I in DC and get to know her both on the local and national level. I've missed her since her illness and will continue to miss her. A lovely person!

For me, she was the face and the voice of AMWA for as long as I can remember. She flew down to Miami during her presidency many years ago to energize our branch ( which we were starting) and she won over all the women MDs with her passion compassion and humor.
She has led many national projects in support of women's health for AMWA and made a difference among women and our organization.
She has introduced me and many AMWA members to the MWIA and I have learned from her to be involved in international issues affecting women in medicine and women's health.
I enjoyed her watercolor paintings which reflect her love for life and humanity. What a gal!

Dr. Fourcroy had a tremendous impact as a surgeon at Walter Reed. She was a role model for many young female physicians, and I was honored to know her through her work at AMWA, always bravely standing for what was right. We will all work hard to carry on her legacy.

Jean's indomitable spirit continues to live on in perpetuity in all of the women in medicine she inspired and empowered. Her life's work is a testament to the caliber of women physicians needed to break the glass ceiling for women. Jean is a beloved past president of the American Medical Women's Association and will always be part of the fabric of AMWA's mission and vision. Sending love and prayers to all.

Jean was a trailblazer and leader in medicine. As a past president of AMWA, she inspired countless women physicians and medical students. I remember her fearless determination, her advocacy, and her strength. It was an honor to have known her, even for a few short years. She will be greatly missed by friends and colleagues in the American Medical Women's Association.

Jean was a shining light to AMWA, MWIA, women in Urology, and everywhere that she was. She will be sorely missed, we all loved her. She was an amazing AMWA president, and we appreciate all that she's done for our organization. We loved her, and our hearts break for her family in this difficult time. You will be in my thoughts and in my prayers

Jean was indeed a remarkable woman. A barrier-breaker for women in urology, she was celebrated for her academic achievements in female urology, public health achievements in antidopic efforts among Olympic athletes, and hard work as leader, president of AMWA, MWIA, and the National Council of Womens' Health. I am proud to have known her and been her colleague, friend, and co-chief mischiefmaker. A great sense of humor made her a delightful companion and dinner speaker. I miss her very much. A number of my neighbors at Princeton Place (Naples, FL) pool inquired When is your friend Jean coming back? I miss her very much.

I was saddened to hear of Jean's death. I considered her a good friend. Long before she was President of AMWA we had many good times and laughs and she will be sorely missed by me, but of course most of all by her wonderful family. Saddest thing about getting old (92) is losing so many friends.

On behalf of the Medical Women's International Association, I wish to extend our condolences on Jean's passing. She was Vice President of MWIA for North America and served MWIA well. She is fondly remembered with a sketch book always in hand and for the collage of artwork enclosed with her yearly Christmas card! Our thoughts are with her family.

Jean had a wonderful sense of humor. I remember her "fairy wand" at one of our AMWA meetings in her role as board member. AMWA had many benefits from her many roles.
