JOHN ANDERSON Obituary

John W. Anderson  (Age 93)
The retired Washington Post editorial writer died in Alexandria, VA on December 16, 2021 from complications of pneumonia. He retired from The Washington Post in 1996 after a 39-year career with the Post that took him from local reporter to editor to editorial writer, focusing on economics, energy and education.  Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Anderson attended Williams College for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1946. He was assigned to the 88th Infantry Division in Italy, where he wrote for the division newspaper. After discharge, he returned to Williams College and graduated in 1950. He then lived and studied in Italy and Germany for two years. Before going to work for the Post, he worked as a reporter for the York (PA) Dispatch, then the Reading Times. After retirement, he was Journalist-in-Residence at Resources for the Future. He volunteered from 1999 - 2009 with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium, working with elementary school students in Alexandria. His first wife, Madelyn Streeter Anderson, died in 1987, and his second wife, Katherine Burt McKitterick Anderson, died in 2017. He is survived by his brother, L.C. (Toby) Anderson of Haverford, PA, daughter, Hilary Anderson, of Fairfax, son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Lucie Anderson, and grandchildren, Nikolas, Noah, Harry, and Tilly Anderson of Nashville, TN. A memorial gathering will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria.

John was a lovely man and such a talented and incisive writer. I had the privilege of getting to know him when we were at Resources for the Future; we even wrote something together about climate change. I would be grateful if someone could send me his daughter or son's address so that I could mail a snail mail condolence. ruthgreenspanbell at yahoo.com thanks!!

John worked with my husband Stephen Rosenfeld on the Post editorial page for many years. He was also a next-door neighbor of ours in Old Town Alexandria. Steve always said of John that he was "a prince of a man."
