John Quill Obituary
QUILL JOHN J. QUILL (Age 84) General Counsel (Ret.) Defense Contract Audit Agency Died Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Goodwin House Alexandria where he resided in Alexandria , VA. He had pneumonia. He was the loving husband of Mary Ann Gaydos Quill. Also, he was the father of Kimberly A. Enzler (David) of Moneta, VA , Kellyn J. Quill (Peter Gerstenberger) Arlington, VA. and Kathleen Miedema, Belleview, WA. He is also survived by four grandchildren. Mr. Quill was born on May 6, 1926 in Waterbury, Connecticut, the second of three children of the late Edward and Emma (Lau) Quill. He was raised in Waterbury and graduated from Wilby High School, where he achieved great success and happiness playing as a running back on the high school football team. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy. This was during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theatre on the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard. This ship was a night time aircraft carrier and he often spoke of his great awe, admiration, and respect for the courage of the young pilots who took off and landed on this carrier in the black of night, with nothing more to aid them than the few guiding lights on deck. He told of the great sense of loss the crew felt whenever a plane missed the landing deck and the pilot was lost at sea. After returning home from the Navy, he attended Cheshire Academy in New Haven, Connecticut. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio, and the George Washington University Law School, Washington, D.C. with a Master's degree in Law. After spending several years in his own law practice in Alexandria, VA, he joined the Federal government. He served as a Staff Attorney with the U.S. Army Audit Agency at Fort McNair and later joined the newly formed Defense Contract Audit Agency in the U.S. Department of Defense. At the time, the Agency was located at Cameron Station. Mr. Quill became General Counsel of the Agency and retired in that capacity in January, 1994. He discovered he had an talent for do-it-yourself home remodeling and spent many years designing and building additions to his small two bedroom one bath house, turning it into a large four bedroom, two bath house. He was especially proud of the large rec room addition that he designed and built with the large brick and stone fireplace as the main attraction of that room. He then surrounded the house with sun decks, as he enjoyed working as an attorney by day and a "builder" at night and on weekends. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in John's name to the Goodwin House Foundation, 4800 Fillmore Ave., Alexandria, VA 22311.
