Louis Byron Obituary

LOUIS McCOMAS BYRON
Returned home after a long and rich life on Tuesday, November 30, 2011 at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, AZ. He had retired with his beloved wife Linda to Tucson after having lived in Washington, D.C. for his entire life. He was born in 1938 in Williamsport, MD to Katherine and William Byron. His father was a representative in U.S. Congress for the 6th District of the State of Maryland, and his great-grandfather was a U.S. Senator from Maryland. A successful businessman who ran three family businesses, which at one time employed over 600 people, he was also very committed to philanthropic work in the D.C. area. He served on the boards of Children's Hospital, WETA (public television), and several educational institutions for many years. He was also on the board of the Washington National Cathedral Fund. The Cathedral always inspired him and held a special spiritual place in his heart. He was a gentle, yet commanding, soul who believed in treating all with kindness and respect. He instilled in all those around him a sense of responsibility to take care of those less fortunate than ourselves. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda; his three sons, Louis Jr., Thomas, and Scott; his daughter-in-law, Bridget; and his three grandchildren, Madison, Brayden, and McKenzie. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 5, 2011 in Tucson, AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Washington National Cathedral, ATTN: Development Office, 3101 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, D.C., 20016-5098. Arrangements by BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, Tucson, AZ, (520)296-7193.

I want folks to know that my Dad's death was a blessing. Losing a loved one is always difficult but his bone cancer was advancing very aggressively and he was in a lot of pain. So we had enough time to say our good byes but he went quickly which limited his suffering.

My Dad truly loved all of the employees who worked for our family businesses over the years. He viewed all of his employees as family. Whether it was paying for an operation that was not covered by insurance or sending an employee back to school to get an advanced degree, my Dad's actions were always driven by generosity and a deep sense of responsibility for other people. He is a great example of how altruism can successfully mesh with capitalism.

73 is still relatively young these days but, nonetheless, my Dad had such a full and rich life. His interests ranged from history to ancient cultures to antiques and he had a chance to engage in all that he loved. His travels to Egypt and Antarctica in particular profoundly changed him: one, the awesome monuments built by ancient man, the other, a vast space largely untouched by man, created by the hands of God.

Thanks to all of you for your prayers and love and support. We are all creatures of God and we all have an eternal spirit that that is freed from our body upon death. So I feel my Dad is still with me, and I feel his love and support as I continue to run Marvel Manufacturing, our family business.

Love, Louis

I had conversations on the phone with Mr. Lou Byron and they were always wonderful. These were business calls but
he would always talk about his wife Linda. I knew he love his family.
He will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy. He truly will be missed for his generosity, kindness, civility, and concern for others. He was a gentleman who put the needs of others before his own. He ran the good race, and may he rest in peace. Forever in our memory.
