LUTHER CHIEN Obituary

LUTHER COURT CHIEN
Luther Court Chien, 97, of Pitman, NJ passed away on November 12, 2021 at his son's home, with his family by his side. Luther was born on December 30, 1923 to Helen Court Chien and Fang Shih Chien in Qingdao, China. He was raised by his mother while his father was serving as Deputy Minister of the Treasury for the Republic of China under Chiang Kai-shek. There, he was raised in a home with approximately eight siblings as their Peking hutong was converted by Helen Court Chien into a summertime retreat. In 1939, he left China to attend Harvard on a scholarship and graduated in 1944 with a B.S. in Chemistry. Immediately following graduation, he attended MIT and received his M.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1947. During that time, he served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician. Luther married Nellie Helen Chien, on July 9th, 1949 and together they moved to Pitman, NJ. Luther worked as a Chemical Engineer and Departmental Fellow under DuPont. He assisted in many important discoveries, such as Freon and Teflon, as well as building multiple chemical plants throughout the course of his illustrious 41 year career. Luther is survived by his two sons, Kenneth and David, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He wrote an autobiography in 2013, titled "When East Weds West or Yin Merges With Yang" so that his family can reminisce on his eventful life for generations to come. Services at a later date.
