MAURICE WATERS Obituary

MAURICE WATERS
Maurice Waters, a lifelong advocate for peace and professor at Wayne State Univ. in Detroit, MI, died August 8, 2018 at his home in Chevy Chase, MD. He was 95. Maury became a man at 11 during the Depression when his father died, leaving a wife and six children. He tried to enlist in the Naval Air Force but was rejected due to poor vision - even after trying to memorize the eye chart. He entered the Army, landed at Normandy, fought across Europe and returned home with a purple heart, outraged by fascism and the anti-Semitism he experienced in the Army.  He attended Antioch College on the GI bill, met and married Elinor Bloch, his wife of 69 years. He worked in the 1948 campaign of Henry Wallace, earned a PhD at the Univ. of Chicago and joined the faculty at Wayne State in 1960. He taught there for 40 years, and spent two as a visiting professor at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.  He and Elly raised three children who have continued his work for social justice. He is survived by Elly; George and Cindy Waters, Rob Waters and Sara Grunstein, Judy Waters and Stuart Howard; grandchildren Caitlin and Josh and countless friends and relatives. A memorial will be Sunday, 3 p.m. in the community room at 4701 Willard Ave, Chevy Chase, MD. Donations in his honor may be made to the Alliance for Justice, JSSA Hospice or political organization of Maury's (obvious) choice.
