Of Alexandria, VA, died Thursday, October 28, 2004, at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC, after a 6-month battle with cancer. Born and raised in Meridian, MS, Melissa graduated from Meridian High School in 1986, before attending the University of Alabama where she earned a B.S. and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She complete Law School at the University of Mississippi and served on the Mississippi Law Journal. While at Old Miss Law School, she met and married Johnny Marquez of Gulfport, MS. After graduation, they moved to Alexandria, VA and Melissa began working with the Board of Veterans' Appeals at the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs. She served as President of the Mississippi Society of Washington, DC and was an active member of her community and church, but her main and most cherished role was taking care of their three beautiful children.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, friend, daughter and sister. Even to the very end of her courageous struggle to fight cancer, she never missed one of her children's school or athletic activities. She always put the needs of her family and friends before her own.
Survivors include her husband, John Marquez; her two daughters, Marguerite (8) and Lilly (2); son, John (6), all of Alexandria, VA; her parents, Lix Joseph Fruge, Jr. and Peggi Fruge; a brother, L.J. Fruge and his wife, Nicola, all of Meridian, MS; father-in-law, John Marquez and mother-in-law, Joan Marquez; and sister-in-law, Yvette Marquez, all of Gulfport, MS.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 1, 2004 at RIEMANN FUNERAL HOME, 25th Ave., Gulfport, MS, where friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 12:30 p.m. with Monsignor James McGough, officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum, Gulfport, MS.
The family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 417 Security Square, Gulfport, MS 39507.
