PENNY FUCHS Obituary
PENNY BENDER FUCHS (Age 50)
Penny Bender Fuchs, a veteran journalist and an honored teacher at the University of Maryland, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2012, following a seven-year battle with cancer. Penny came to Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism as a graduate student in 1999 and rose through the ranks to become interim associate dean of academic affairs last spring. She had served the college full-time since 2003 as a lecturer, director of assessment, scholarship coordinator, and director of career placement and professional development. A tribute to Penny can be seen at www.merrill.umd.edu. More than a successful journalist and teacher, Penny was a wonderful and loving wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Michael; daughter, Kathryn; son, Jonathan; mother, Georgeanne, and sister, Mary. She was preceded in death by her father, Michael Bender. Family will receive friends on Friday, September 7, at 10 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 1607 Grace Church Road, Silver Spring, MD, to be followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. and interment at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shepherd's Table of Silver Spring.

Penny was a tremendous inspiration to me and to all that I was able to see come to fruition during my time as a journalist. I'm so grateful for her warmth and the level in which she cared about her work. Penny thank you for the impact you had on my life! My deepest condolences to the family.
