Today is my mom's birthday. It's the first since her passing, almost a year ago, which is hard to believe. Time has both crept and flew all at once, and I can't believe we have arrived at today without my mom's physical presence with us. I say "physical" because I know Mom is truly with us every day. I always thought the hardest time to be away from Mom would be the holidays, because Mom made Thanksgiving to Christmas and New Year's a very memorable time. But the summer has turned out to be an especially difficult time as well. My brother Christopher married his new wife Amy in June; I celebrated my 32nd birthday; we celebrated America's birthday (Mom was THE patriot); and now we're at July 8th. In addition this is the time of year we would have been heading to Deep Creek Lake in Maryland, our family's summer vacation spot. While this year has been extremely difficult for our family, I'm comforted in knowing that part of the reason for that difficulty is because of the many special things my mom did to make this time of year so wonderful. If we didn't have all of those amazing memories, things might be easier to go through at this point. But frankly, I wouldn't have it another way. I will spend today thinking fondly of how my mom made birthdays, holidays, and every day so special. And I will, as was Mom's tradition, eat a big ol' slice of chocolate cake tonight to celebrate that amazing person's big day. So happy birthday Mom...I'm smiling up at you, and because of you.
