THOMAS CANNON Obituary


THOMAS FRANCIS CANNON, JR.  (Age 72)  
Of Lincoln, VA, died on Sunday, August 20, 2017. Thomas was a retired professor of English at American University in Washington, DC, where he taught for 30 years. He taught an extensive variety of courses, but particularly loved Chaucer, D.H. Lawrence, Shakespeare, and creative writing. He was an engaging and inspiring professor, and was proud of his many friendships with students that lasted beyond the classroom. He is survived by his his daughters, Jessica Taylor Cannon and Johanna Taylor Cannon; sister, Lynda Cannon Greene, relatives, friends, and former students. He is predeceased by his wife ,Julia Taylor Cannon. He is remembered for his wit and wisdom, his joy in learning, his gift for storytelling, his enthusiasm, his singular sense of humor, and for the love he extended to his family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at the Goose Creek Friends Meeting House, 18204 Lincoln Road, Lincoln, VA 20160. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southern Poverty Law Center (splcenter.org) and Defenders of Wildlife (defenders.org).

I babysat the girls when they were very small, and proudly wore the AU sweatshirt Tom gave me for Christmas until it fell apart.

Lovely man, so sad to hear of his passing too late to truly pay my respects.

Tom was my teacher and good friend. My condolences to his daughters and the rest of his family. He was a remarkable man and the most gifted teacher I've ever known.
