WILLIAM SHERRILL Obituary


 
WILLIAM HENRY SHERRILL, SR.  (Age 80)  
Of Bethesda, MD passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Dr. Marlene White Sherrill. He was born on December 8, 1932, in Newton, N.C., to the late Guy and Blanche Sherrill. He was preceded in death by his first wife Gloria Dean Mullins Sherrill, a granddaughter Nikkisha and nine siblings. He is survived by a brother Harvey Sherrill and children William Henry Sherrill Jr., Adrienne Sherrill Budd, Eric Sherrill, Karen King (Jason), Sharon Sherrill, Mykah McNeil and Marcus McNeil (Adriyani). He is the cherished grandfather of Monique, William Henry III, Ryan, Tyler, Jordan, Micah, and Mykah. He is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.He earned a B.A. in Sociology at Shaw University, M.A. in Counseling at the University of Michigan and he completed coursework toward a PhD in Counseling Psychology-Higher Education Administration at U.C. Berkeley. Mr. Sherrill enjoyed a successful career as an educator. He taught and counseled high school students in VA and CA. He held several positions at U.C. Berkeley before being appointed as the first African-American Director of Undergraduate Admissions in 1969. He left U.C. Berkeley in 1972 to serve as the Dean of Admissions, Records and Financial Aid at Howard University where he worked until his retirement in 1991. He served as a Deacon at Zion Baptist Church and was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Zion Baptist Church, 4850 Blagden Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20011. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Shaw University Scholarship Fund c/o Shaw University, 118 E. South Street Raleigh, N. C. 27601. Funeral services by Johnson & Jenkins Funeral Home

Hi, my name is Viola Gates Long, my mother, Martha Arlena Sherill,was William Sherrill sister. I remember the times that we shared with Grandpa Sherrill in Newton, NC. The last time I seen Uncle Bill was at My uncle Guy Roberts funeral in which I met also his wife Marlene. I know that many of his children may not know me as a relative, but I express my deepest sympathy to his wife and children. I reside in High Point, NC and would like to become familiarize more with my family.
