WILLIS SCUDDER Obituary

SCUDDER Colonel Willis Beals Scudder Col. USA (Ret.) (Age 102) Bill Scudder of Alexandria, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at The Fairfax in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Phyllis Ryan Scudder. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, attended Northwestern High School and later the University of Western Michigan, Louisiana State University, receiving his Masters from American University. He entered the Army in 1942; served with the 89th Infantry Division and the Third and Seventh U.S. Armies in Europe during WWII. Later he served in various posts in the U.S., Europe, Far East and the Middle East. He taught at the Command and General Staff College and was a graduate of that institution as well as the Army War College and other service schools. His assignments included tours with U.S. Missions to China, Turkey and Vietnam. In 1948 he met and married Phyllis Ryan Scudder, who was attached to the U.S. Embassy in Nanking, China. Subsequently, Colonel Scudder served in several Asian, Middle Eastern and European assignments. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1969 he taught at West Springfield High School, Fairfax County. He was a member of the Vestry and a Warden of Christ Church of Alexandria; The Retired Officers Assn.; 89th Division Society; Alexandria Historical Society; Friends of Ft. Ward; Disabled American Veterans; US Army War College Alumni Assn.; Louisiana State University Alumni Assn.; Scudder Assn.; International Optimists and Military Order of the Carabao. Colonel Scudder is survived by three sons, Donald Erik, Charles Francis and wife, Karen, and Duff Allen and wife, Brenda, and two daughters, Sally Galan and husband, Robert, Diana Farthing and husband, John, 11 grandchildren Erik Scudder, Jeff Scudder, Andre Galan, Vanessa Finnerty, Kristen Scudder, Connor Scudder, Michael Farthing, Stephen Farthing, Patrick Farthing, Sarah Brown, Joe Brown, their mother, Diane and five great-grandchildren, Lia Galan, Annabelle Galan, Ella Scudder, Dominic Finnerty and Benjamin Scudder. Graveside service will be at Arlington National Cemetery.Graveside service will be at Arlington National Cemetery.

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Scudder, he was my favorite teacher at West Springfield High. I still remember Mr. Scudder stories and it's been 44 years. We were all lucky to have known him.
