Richard McCue Obituary

Richard Dick McCue passed away on October 16, 2017. Dick was the son of the late Richard Philip McCue and the late Beatrice (Shivery) McCue, and brother of Danny, Julie, Kathy and the late Gary and Eileen. A lifelong resident of Brookline, he graduated from Brookline High School in 1970, having attended Devotion School and St. Aidans grammar school. Custodian/ caretaker at Temple Emeth in Chestnut Hill for 34 years, Dick was extremely devoted and greatly appreciated by his Temple Emeth family. He was honored as Temple Emeth Brotherhoods Man of the Year in 2010 for his support and service that went so far above and beyond, for his kindness and generosity, and for his persona which exemplified the Mens Clubs ideals of leadership, innovation and community. Dick would be out at 4 am shoveling and snowblowing in the fiercest of New England storms, making sure that the 7 am minyan crowd could safely park on the streets and walk on the sidewalks. Additionally, they would come out after the morning service and find that Dick had cleaned the snow off of all their cars. He just did it, and quietly did many other generous and thoughtful things to help others and make the synagogue run smoothly and beautifully. An avid Beatles fan as well as a big-time Patriots fan, Dick's interests included music, sports, politics, media; he loved Spiderman and other superheroes, and was very well-read and knowledgeable on a great many topics. And anyone who knew Dick knew of his love of animals | most especially of his late beloved dog, Rufus. The two of them were inseparable. Dicks favorite pastime was taking Rufus to Nantasket Beach. Dick will be greatly missed by all those blessed to have known him. Private services will be held.

Dick will be missed dearly. Harriet and I were very close with him. He was always available for help, assistance or guidance in setting up functions. The rummage sale run by Harriet ran very smoothly because of Richard's efforts. Whenever we were assigned to decorate for functions Richard could not be more helpful in making the program successful. We will miss him a great deal. He was a very unique and special person.

Dick always thought of the other person. Aware of my interests, he greeted me with questions about my job, the Celtics, politics, and history. I would pass Temple Emeth on my morning jog to work at about 5:30 am, and would stop and enjoy a friendly conversation with Dick. It was always filled with humor and cheer. He kept me informed about Temple news. He knew all the details about how to celebrate the Jewish holidays. He took good care of everyone!

Dick was a very caring and hardworking person who loved music and sci fi and of course his best friend, Rufus. I still treasure the gifts that he gave me over the years; and we used to swap books and critiques of movies and TV shows. His passing has left a hole in the fabric of the community.
