Polly Player Obituary

Polly (Pappas) Player, 93, longtime resident of Juniper Street and the wife of the late Gordon C. Player, died Tuesday July 6, 2010 in the Port Healthcare Center, Newburyport following her long illness. Born in Ipswich April 17, 1917 daughter of the late George M. and Annie (Katchevelis) Pappas, she was raised in Ipswich, a 1934 graduate of the former Manning High School. Married in 1941 she and her late husband owned and operated the Player Trucking Company, the P.& A. package store and later A.J. Barton Monument Co. all of Ipswich. Mrs. Player was lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Ipswich and was a member of the Eastern Order of the Eastern Star. She was a Past Matron of the Heard Chapter #94, and Past Deputy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Mass. Eastern Star. She is survived by a son, Gordon C. Player Jr.; a daughter, Pollyann LePage and her husband Philip; four grandchildren, Matthew J. LePage of California, Ashley E. Sotiropoulos of Ipswich, Christopher A. Player of Vermont, Nicholas L. Player of Ipswich; two great-grandchildren; two nephews, George Pappas and James Pappas both of Rowley, nieces Janet Squires of Georgetown and Katherine Anderson of Lowell; sister-in-law and dear friend Julie (Pappas) Burke of Georgetown. She was predeceased by her brothers Michael Pappas and Nicholas Pappas both formerly of Ipswich; sisters Julia Adelson formerly of Holyoke, Katherine Abell formerly of Florida and Helen Pappas formerly of Michigan. Her funeral service was held July 9, graveside in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Arrangements were under the direction of the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home of Ipswich.
