George Wesley "Dietz" Noland, 96, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2017. He was born November 12, 1920, to James and Jenny (Thompson) Noland, and raised in Rockland. George was one of nine children (Ruth, Margie, Barbara, Everett, Paul, Herbie, Edward, John), all of whom are deceased. George was inducted into the U.S. Army on September 29, 1942, in Boston. His specialty was Truck Driver 345, and qualified as a SS Rifle Expert Gunner Combat Infantryman. His military travels took him to Northern France, the Rhineland, and Ardennes. This decorated hero was awarded the Victory Medal, Purple Heart GO 16 HQ 80th Division Jan. 16, 1945, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Award. On November 28, 1945, PFC First Class Noland was honorably discharged from the military service at Fort Devens. George was an avid supporter of the American Legion and the VFW. He married the love of his life Marguerite C. (Roose) shortly after his discharge. They raised three girls and two boys on Ritter Road in Hingham. During this time George worked at the Hingham Ammunition Depot as a guard. Later he worked for the U.S. Governments General Services Agency (GSA) at the Hingham Shipyard in the general maintenance department, retiring after 30 years of service in 1977. George will be remembered as the "go to guy". If you needed it fixed or help, he was the man to call. He loved to go camping with the family in Plymouth and New Hampshire. He is survived by his children, Lois (Charles) D'Avolio of South Yarmouth, Sharon (Emile) Laquerre of Corpus Christi, TX, Janet Noland of South Yarmouth; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
