Joseph Walsh Obituary

Joseph G. Walsh beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend. Age 50, of St. Paul, MN and formerly of Newton, MA, left this world June 6, 2012, after a long battle with cancer. Joe was born and raised in Newton, MA, as the fourth son of parents John F. and Teresa (OGrady) Walsh. He graduated from Newton South High School, where he participated in sports, theatre and student government. Joe won the senior cup at his NSHS graduation in 1980. At the University of Chicago he was elected president of the student body and acted in many plays. A history major, Joe also worked in development for the Chicago Historical Society before completing his education at Cardozo School of Law in New York, N.Y. He was practicing copyright and trademark law in 1995 when he met his soul mate, Ann Harrington, on an Amtrak train between New York and Boston. Joe made her laugh that day and every day since. They married in 2001 and settled in Brooklyn, NY, where he became deeply involved in presidential campaigns. When Ann had the opportunity to return to her home state of Minnesota in 2005 to work for the Pioneer Press, Joe embraced St. Paul as his own. He played softball for St. Lukes Catholic Church (now St. Thomas More), acted in a community theatre production, and joined William Mitchell College of Law as Assistant Director of Admissions, where he became a tireless ambassador for the school. Diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2008, Joe was determined not to be defined by his illness. He continued to work until the end, and devoted much of his last months to family and friends and his precious cats, Seamus and Dean. Joe is survived by his beloved wife; older brothers John, his wife Jane and their children Elizabeth & Evan of Westwood; William, his wife Grace and their children; Bill Jr. (and his wife Wen) & Jesse of Hull; and his twin brother, Gregory of Houston, TX and Buzzards Bay; and sister-in-law Deborah of Bourne; in-laws David and Aleda Harrington of St. Peter, MN, brother-in-law Bruce Harrington his wife Elizabeth and their daughter Claire of St. Paul, MN; and sister-in-law Linda Christian and her husband Chris of Blanco, TX. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Michael. A memorial service was held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 15 at House of Hope Presbyterian Church, 797 Summit Ave., St. Paul with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at OHalloran & Murphy, 575 South Snelling Ave., St. Paul. A service in the Boston area will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Chicago, William Mitchell College of Law, or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

I just found out about Joe's passing a few days ago. I remember Joe as a wonderful performer in many plays he acted in while he was a student at Newton South High School. I first worked with Joe in the musical, "Anything Goes " where he played the part called Moonface. In "A Midsummer Night's Dream ", Joe was Oberon, King of the Fairies. He was the Headless man in "Pippin". He acted in "Inherit the Wind", "How to Succeed in Business", "My Fair Lady", and other shows. The last time I worked with Joe and his brother Greg was singing the song, "Officer Krupke" in the annual Variety Show. Joe was always upbeat, funny, caring, and had a positive attitude towards everything. My condolences to the family.

It was a pleasure playing football with joe as a teammate, he was always ready and knew the plays. Joe played as hard as he could and always have 110% with a smile!

I will always remember Joe as a tireless leader for our NSHS class. Always a gentleman, his fine sense of humor always put us in good spirits. We had many good times together in the plays. My condolences to Greg, Ann and the entire family.

Joe was a leader in all respects. I recall him as a tireless worker on the football field. Always ready for practice, Always hustling during drills, Overcoming any shortcomings (cute) with great attitude and smarts. Always knew the play and creatively getting out of blocks to make the tackles.
I recall his address to the senior class as inspirational and short (gotta luv that).
Here's to you Joe!!
