Henry Markowitz Obituary

Dr. Henry Joel Markowitz died peacefully on Friday, September 29 in Albany,California. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Susan Markowitz, by his sister Faye-Ann Markowitz-DElia, his children Steven, Devora and Beth, his son-in- law John Anner (married to Devora), and his grandchildren Eva, Zelie and Sophia Anner. Henry was born on July 17, 1937 to Maurice and Eva Markowitz. He grew up in Roxbury and Mattapan, and later moved to Sharon Mass. He attended Boys Latin School in Boston, and graduated from Boston University and Tufts Dental School. For nearly fifty years, he practiced dentistry in his home, and was later a professor at Tufts Dental School where he pioneered techniques for digital imaging. A veteran of the US armed service, Henry served as a captain and dentist in the Army in Fort Riley, Kansas. His father was a butcher, and after the family moved to Sharon he opened a store called Towne Market Fine Meats, where Henry worked alongside his mother, father and sister. It was while working at Towne Market that he met the love of his life, Susan, walking along a road as he drove the delivery truck. Lost (or so he always claimed), he stopped to ask for directions, and one thing led to another. They were married on January 27th, 1960. When their children were little, Henry and Susan decided to put family time first, and so Henry frequently closed his business in the summers to travel across North America in a camper van, the three kids nestled among sleeping bags and comic books in the back. Together they drove, camped, slept under the stars and made dozens of new friends. After retiring, he and Susan moved to California to be near their children and grandchildren, each of whom Henry adored. Henry was known for his love of travel, the pleasure he took in meals with his family and friends, his beautiful smile, and for being a great dentist. He enjoyed life to the fullest, whether sunning on a beach in Jamaica with his sister, skiing in Vermont, touring Vietnam or going on a walk with his granddaughters. Loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend. Henry was all of these things, and so much more. Henry was a lifelong friend to people he met as a young man and throughout his life. Most of all, he was a loving and generous man who cared for his family. May he rest in peace. The burial service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon Mass, at 12:45pm on Friday, October 13. A celebration of Henry's life will follow at the home of Ken and Ruth Weiner, 1267 Bay Road, Sharon. Please park on the side of the house on Chessman Drive. Susan,
I was sorry to read in the recent edition of the BLSA Gratiae of Henry's passing in September. He and my brother, Jack Kirk, were friends at Boston Latin School, as both were members of the class of '55 and Jack often mentioned Henry's name.

Sue and family,

I was so sorry to hear of Henry's passing - I just heard from one of our classmates. My thoughts are with you today, as they were at our recent reunion. My sincerest condolences.
