Angie Slabach Obituary

SLABACH ADVANCE Angie Browder Slabach June 18, 1966 - May 8, 2013 Angie Browder Slabach, 46, died peacefully surrounded by family on May 8, 2013 following a three-year battle with breast cancer. She was born June 18, 1966 to Benjamin T. and Ann Orrell Browder. Angie grew up in Davie County and spent all of her life there with the exception of her college years. She graduated from Davie County High School in 1984 and was a highly-followed athlete who excelled in all sports, but most specifically basketball. It was easy to see her love for the game from a very young age as she played in the gym at Shady Grove School or wherever there happened to be a basketball goal. If there was a pick-up game, she was there!! She was twice voted the Central Piedmont Conference Basketball Player of the Year and followed a successful career at Davie to the college ranks at High Point University. Following graduation in 1988, she returned to her high school alma mater as a math teacher and head coach of the girls basketball team. Success followed her throughout her teaching and coaching years with many wins notched in her "W" column both on the basketball court and in the classroom. She was a member of the inaugural class inducted into the Davie County Hall of Fame in 2004. She married the love of her life and best friend, Gary Slabach in 1992 and thus began the union that would produce four children, affectionately known to her as "her babies". As her family grew, she retired early from teaching and directed her attention to raising her family which she did flawlessly with the perfect balance of a strict hand of guidance and the deep love that she felt for each of them. She was a founding member of Hillsdale United Methodist Church where she filled many rolls over the years, most effectively as a teacher and Bible study leader. Her unfailing love for Jesus and encouragement to others to that end will be one of her many lasting legacies. Angie will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. She never met a stranger and touched many, many lives in positive ways. She could regularly be found at school functions, ball fields and courts of all kinds as she cheered on her children or others that she knew. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch, tending her garden, sitting by a fire, walking on the railroad tracks, meeting friends at the store and spending time at Ocean Isle Beach. Angie was preceded in death by grandparents Tom and Jessie Browder and Walter Orrell. In addition to her parents and husband, Angie is survived by her "four babies", Lake, Allie, Heath and Emma. She is also survived by her grandmother Lucille Orrell, her sister, LuAnn Parker (Greg), her brother, Tommy Browder (Deana), Mother and Father-in-Law, Dean and Martha Slabach, brother and sister-in-law, Greg and Shelley Carlton, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 10 at Hillsdale United Methodist Church from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. A memorial service led by Rev. Jerry Webb will be held at the church on Saturday, May 11 at 2:00 p.m.. A private burial service for family will follow. The family would like to thank all those who have shared in Angie's life and especially those who have been supportive as she fought for the past three years. Angie sends special thanks to Dr. Susan Melin and the Oncology Department at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center as well as to the very helpful team on the 9th Floor of Reynolds Tower. She was also very grateful for the special assistance from patient advocate and lifelong best friend, Mandy Smith. Memorial contributions can be made to the Davie Community Foundation at P.O. Box 546, Mocksville, NC 27028 for the Angie Slabach Memorial Scholarship which will provide financial aid to deserving students from Davie County. Many hearts are breaking, but Heaven is singing as another precious angel has arrived. Angie touched so many lives, especially my 12 year old daughter, Easton. Angie took the time to teach Easton the game of basketball. I believe they developed a special bond. Angie gave basketballs to her team and Easton still has hers and will not play with another because Angie gave it to her. Angie's loving heart was like no other. She will truly be missed. Your family will always be in our thoughts and prayers. Kelly, Mark, Chase and Easton Johnson

As the tears flow and an emptiness is in our hearts, we all know what a blessing Angie was. I thank God for her positive attitude from the day she was born. Angie packed a lot into the time she was with us.
