Ann Ryder Obituary

Ann Denton Ryder

Jul 14, 1936 - Aug 11, 2024

Early on the morning of August 11th, Ann Denton Ryder of Winston-Salem was called home to Heaven. Departing on the Sabbath and arriving at the Pearly Gates in the blink of an eye, I'm sure angels rejoiced as she rejoined her loving husband, Gene and son, Rick, who had gone before her.

Born July 14th, 1936 in Danville, Va., she is survived by her son, Gregory Ryan Ryder; grandchildren, Nicolas Ryan Siano and Samantha Marie Siano; brother, Wayland Beecher Denton III and his wife, Kay of Kannapolis; sister, Sandra Denton Fischel and her husband, Tom of Cullowhee; and brother, James Denton.

Ann was raised in Bedford, Va. by her parents, Wayland Beecher and Dorothy Ware Denton. Tough times were the norm as her family struggled like most to weather the Great Depression. Over time the family thrived. While attending high school there, Ann met the man she would eventually marry and raise her own family with.

Ann attended the University of Richmond studying psychology, eventually earing her Master's Degree. When the family moved to Winston-Salem, she worked with the local Metal Health Association before being hired by the North Carolina Department of Mental Health and Human Resources. As an Area Director, she traveled the state to evaluate and assist local organizations provide better services for patients. She also spent time alongside her husband training nurses at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.

She was very actively involved with her family in Christ at First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Deacon, Sunday school teacher and committee member, she was dedicated to serving through her ministry there.

Ann was also a founding member of Forsyth County's Human Relations Commission, whose purpose was to improve and promote better race relations for our local community and beyond.

A memorial service for Ann will be held Wednesday, August 28th at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church on Fifth Street in downtown Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Shepherd's Center Ministry at https://www.shepherdscenter.org/ in her honor. Condolences may be shared online at www.salemfh.com.

I too knew Ann from Out of the Box at the Shepherd Center, where she lead an open discussion group. I truly enjoyed the group. She was a calm, warm person.

I enjoyed being with Ann when she was the moderator of Thinking Outside the Box at the Shepherd's Center of Winston-Salem.
She worked and volunteered in many mental health positions that were important for the promotion of programs to help behavioral health clients. She was greatly appreciated.

My deepest condolences to the family. I met Ann & Gene through the First Baptist Church on 5th Street. I met them when they opened up the Open Doors for the Arts there. I grieved for Gene when he passed. No 2 finer people ever walked this , or left such a great footprint, as Ann & Gene.
