Richard Thorpe Obituary

McLEANSVILLE - Mr. Richard Wade "Dick" Thorpe, 75, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Thorpe's funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel, with the Rev. Rufus C. Avery officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery Veterans Circle with full military honors. Dick Thorpe was born June 27, 1927, in Winston-Salem, to the late Alva and Sally Gentry Thorpe. He was a retired contract administrator with Western Electric Co. and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Dick was a member of Starmount Presbyterian Church and the Professional Bowlers Association. He taught ballroom dancing at Fred Astaire Studios for many years. Mr. Thorpe also volunteered with the Salvation Army for many years. Survivors include a daughter, Tanya Thorpe Lumley of Winston-Salem; a very special compan-ion, Norma Lewis of McLeans-ville; brothers Billy Thorpe of Slier City and Roger Thorpe and his wife, Polly, of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Crystal Michelle Lumley and Chad Andrew Lumley, both of Winston-Salem; and a great-grandchild, Jonathan David "J.D." Dooley Jr. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening at Forbis & Dick North Elm Street. Flowers are wel-comed; or memorials may be made to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
