Harold Mearl Fink, passed away October 13, 2016 at home in Lake Wylie, SC.
He was born in York to Mearl and Grace Kline Fink. Two days after graduating high school in York, he and some of his friends joined the merchant marines. His ship was off the coast of Japan when the atomic bomb was deployed.
Upon returning home he enlisted in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers, receiving his 2nd Lieutenant commission. He served for 18 years in the Army Reserves and retired as a Major.
Harold earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree from the University of Toledo, specializing in prestressed concrete, a new system of which changed building construction. He joined Columbia Concrete Products and became president of the company. In 1957 he attended the First World Conference on prestressed concrete. He later joined the international construction division of Owens Corning Fiberglass in Philadelphia. The senior members purchased the division and relocated to Charlotte, NC. He named the company Performance Contracts, Inc. He was head of corporate planning. He had been very active in NICA (National Insulation Contractor Assoc), was a member of Advent Lutheran Church, and attended River Hills Community Church. He was a member of the River Hills Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 68 yrs., Joyce Zeigler Fink; sister, Norma Brown of Inman, SC; a nephew, Dr. Kenneth Brown and wife, Jackie of Beaufort, SC; a niece, Lynn Wythe and husband, David of Chapin, SC; a niece, Mary Geesy and husband, Steve of Dover; five great nephews and one great niece.
A memorial service was held at the River Hills Community Church on November 1, 2016. Inurnment was at Indiantown Gap Military Cemetery.
