James Hartman Obituary

James L. Hartman
York
James L. Hartman, 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 3, with his loving wife and family surrounding him. He was the beloved husband of Ruth A. (Fitz) Hartman.
Mr. Hartman was born in Springfield Township on January 28, 1933, and was the son of the late Lawrence and Blanche (Godfrey) Hartman.
James was a 1950 graduate of Dallastown High School. In his earlier years, he worked for Smith Village and then went on to take over his grandfather's home-cooked ham business for both New Eastern and Central Markets. Later, to support his large growing family, he went to truck driving school and drove for Agway, Halls and finally retiring from ABF Trucking, with over 33 total years of driving experience.
Jim was a lifetime member of the Codorus Church of the Brethren in Loganville, where he sang in the men's quartet. He loved to hunt and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan. He also enjoyed hunting for seashells with his wife in the Outer Banks and in Florida. He played baseball for Dallastown High School and then went on to play for the Susquehanna League and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his children, Steve Hartman, Cindy Pilgrim and her husband Jerry, Linda Hartman and her husband Marty, Ron Hartman, David Hartman and his wife Carol, Tina Boyer and her husband DeWaine, and Sherri Pitzer and her husband Rick; grandchildren, Jamie Altland, Kelly Rudacille, Jodi Pilgrim, Josh Jackson, Jason Hartman, Jeremy Hartman, Tiffany Fauth, Tyler Hartman, Dane Hartman, Garrett Hartman, Dylan Hartman, Madeline Hartman, Michael Flory, Jared Pitzer, Kelsey Barr and Derek Pitzer; step grandchildren, Brandon Boyer and Sarah Mazzulla. He is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren with one expected and four step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Arlene Hartman; and grandchildren, Carrie Flory and Matthew and David Pilgrim.
A funeral service to honor Jim's life will be held at Noon on Friday, January 8 at the Codorus Church of the Brethren, 1129 Dunkard Valley Road, Dallastown, PA 17313, with Pastor Rick Fischl officiating. A viewing will be held at the church on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. until the start of the service. Interment will follow in Codorus Cemetery.
Jim was a very giving man and loved his family dearly. He had a special gift as a jokester and of making people laugh. He will be loved and remembered by so many.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Codorus Church of the Brethren.
The Austin H. Eberly Funeral Home, Inc., Dallastown, is in charge of arrangements.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff in the Coronary Care Unit at York Hospital for the loving care and support they gave to Jim and his family.
