Peter Hoet Obituary

YORK Peter J. Hoet, 81, originally of The Netherlands, died Monday, May 9, 2011, at Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with Parkinson's. He was the husband of Linda (Cover) Hengst, and the late Maria Elizabeth (Mittlemeyer) Hoet. Born January 6, 1930, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, he was the first child of the late Johannes (Jan) Christiaan and the late Alwine Clara (Platz) Hoet. After graduating from high school in Amsterdam, he served in the Dutch Army where he became proficient with Morse code. He worked for the Dutch Postal Telephone and Telegraph as an International Morse Code operator before immigrating to New York in 1954, where he became a U.S. citizen. Mr. Hoet worked for various engineering firms while attending night school at City College of New York. In 1964 he moved to York with his family, transferring with his job at AMF. He continued his education, finally graduating in 1966 with a B.S. in Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He retired from BAE Systems in 1998, but continued consulting as an expert witness for several years. In 1986, he and his wife, Linda Hengst, moved to Germany for two years, where they spent countless hours visiting every castle, cathedral, and museum in Europe. Traveling with Linda was a favorite passion. They were privileged to visit every continent together except Antarctica. He enjoyed great food and wine and passed that love onto his four children. "Opa" especially enjoyed his six grandchildren, taking great pride in their educational accomplishments. In addition to his wife of 29 years, Mr. Hoet is survived by two sons, Erik Hoet and his wife, Jennifer Domal of West Chester, and Roland Hoet and his wife, Beth of York; two daughters, Dr. Sandra Albright and her husband, David Stuhr of Raleigh, N.C., and Laila Stahl and her husband, Gilbert of Spring Grove; stepson, Bradley Hengst and his wife, Deana of York; stepdaughter, Lisa Hengst of Easton; six grandchildren, Brandon, Danielle, and John Hoet, Elizabeth and Alex Albright, and Joshua Hengst; brother, John Hoet and his wife, Nelly of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and a sister, Tiny Hoet and her husband, Ton van den Wollenberg of The Netherlands. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York (the former Hahn Home). A reception with the family will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Check-up Center, 38C Hall Manor, Harrisburg, PA 17104; or to Planned Parenthood of Central Pennsylvania. KuhnerAssociates.com

Dear Erik, Roland, Sandra & Laila,

I was heartbroken to hear from Erik yesterday of your father's passing. I was out of town all last week and am so sorry that I missed the service and the chance to express my sympathy to each of you in person.
Your father's passing is made all the more painful because of the wonderful father and man that he was. Find comfort in all the wonderful memories he created for you and in knowing he is safe and warm in the arms of our Lord.
All of you are your father's legacy and there can be no doubt that he was as proud as any father could be in all of your accomplishments.
My favorite memory of your father, as silly as this may sound, was the wonderful aroma of the Cherry Blend pipe tobacco he smoked. I must admit that I still make it a point when I am in a tobacco shop to take a few minutes to savor that smell, and all of the wonderful memories it brings back.
My thoughts, prayers and love are all with you during this difficult time.
