William Wright Obituary

YORK William Wright, Sr., affectionately known as "Mink", departed this life on May 12, 2012, at York Hospital at the age of 62, following an untimely illness. William was born on July 24, 1949, in York, to Mary Ellen "Nincy" Wright and the late Sandy Bennett. William was the husband of Mary Ann (Allen) Wright. Mr. Wright was a lifelong resident of York, a 1968 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, where he was very active in sports especially basketball and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He attended Morgan State University, was a Veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and was employed at BMY of York (United Defense) for more than 20 years until he retired. Mink was a longtime member of the American Legion Post #127/ 794, he grew up as a part of the Frey's Ave. Family. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed painting and he loved to dance. Many will remember him for his sense of style: warmth, kindness and the way he always made us laugh. He will be greatly missed. Mr. Wright is survived by four children, daughter, Leslie Barnes of York, son, William Wright Jr., of York, daughter, Enjoli and husband, Brandon Spriggs of Harrisburg, and son, Brandon T. Wright of York; nine brothers and sisters, Mary E. "Midge" Jackson of California, Howard Wright of Colorado, Leroy Wright of York, Marsha Marsh of Texas, Marshall Leonard of York, Anthony "Tony" Wright of york, Chonda Wright of York, Lewis Wright of York, Melissa Williams of Arizona; eight grandchildren; and one paternal aunt, Troy of Massachusetts. He also leaves to cherish his memory a cousin with whom he shared a brotherly bond, Larry "spider" Williams of York; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Andrew Wright; and a sister-in-law, Linnea Wright. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Shiloh Baptist Church, 740 W. Locust St., York. Viewing will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to "Save York High Fund".

My condolences to the Wright family. Played basketball with Mink in 1966 thur 1968. His love of the game as so many was in practice and regular season. Last time I saw Mink was with Pee-wee when we were inducted into the basketball hall of fame for York High. I will miss him as so many in York. One thing I always knew when playing with Mink, if I got the ball near the basket he would always be there to finish.
Love to all the family and friends. And Mink we will all see you again.

Respectfully,

John Hawck

With deepest sympathy to Midge & the Wright Family. There are no words that can take the grief away, but in your grief find comfort in his life. He was a fun loving person and whenever we would run into him he would greet us with that wonderful smile. We grew up with Minky and shared great memories. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him. R.I.P. Mink

Mink: i will miss my life-long friend and companion for many years. I know everyone will miss seeing "Da Dancing Machine on every dance floor; I know that the basketball legendary stories that the Old-heads still debate at every class reunion will have a new twist to the plot now ; Iknow that when the family gathers to feast for holidays and BBQs in the yard-His famous fruit punch will be missed ; I also know that finally Mike and Smickle can R.I.P. ,bcause he is also.
We weren't ready for him to go but God bless your final journey.

To the Wright Family –
My deepest heartfelt sympathy during this difficult time. May God wrap His arms around all of you and give you strength and comfort. Even though you have a big family that will be there for each other, you also have a tremendous amount of "extended family and friends" (including me) that love you all, and will be there for you whenever and where ever needed, and that can also share a lot of special memories of Mink. Keeping you all in prayer with love.
