HAMLET, N.C. — John Refford "Junior" Wheeler Jr., 87, formerly 0f 101 Mayfair Drive in Hamlet, passed away peacefully at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla. on Friday, April 25, 2014, after a brief illness.
He was born in Andrews, S.C., the middle child of John Refford Wheeler Sr. and Ethel Fulton Wheeler. He had seven brothers and three sisters.
After retiring from CSX Railroad with 44 plus years of service, he and his wife, Margaret McMullen Wheeler, moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., in 2005 to be near family. Margaret preceded him in death in April of last year.
Junior leaves behind their only son, J. Wesley Wheeler and wife Beth Galloway Wheeler of St. Augustine, Fla.; grandson, Wes Wheeler also of St. Augustine; granddaughter, Denise Wheeler Delaney and her husband Brett Delaney of Louisville, Ky.; great-granddaughter, Makenzie Wheeler Strickland of Laurel Hill, N.C.; and his brother, Edwin Wheeler of Hamlet. He has numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws including Marilyn McMullen Barfield, Bonnie Wheeler, Edna Wheeler, Eleanor Wheeler, Libby Wheeler and Legree Warren.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Richmond County Memorial Park with the Rev. Harry Clark officiating.
