Forrest Cooper, Jr.

Forrest Cooper, Jr., 86, of Sangerfield, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Harding Nursing Home. He was born June 28, 1923, in Milford, the son of the late George Forrest and Hilda Cornish Cooper. He was a graduate of Milford Central School, Clarkson University, MIT, and received his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from New York University. Mr. Cooper was an excellent athlete in his younger years, with offers to play professional baseball in Canada, however decided to pursue his education instead. During WW II, he was a Lieutenant JG in the US Navy stationed on the USS Allen M. Sumner. On February 10, 1942, in Milford, he married Jean Martin. She passed away August 31, 1999. On September 29, 2001, in West Winfield, he married Adele Chernoff Halligan. Mr. Cooper started his professional career at Link Aviation in Binghamton. In 1953, he joined the General Electric Co. in Utica, as the Manager of Engineering, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Clifford J. Fulmer American Legion Post #92, was a longtime member of the Milford Macs Baseball Team and was an avid outdoorsman, who especially enjoyed fishing and golfing. Hs is survived by his wife, Adele Halligan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Debi Cooper of MI and Kipp and Jane Cooper of Norwich; four stepchildren and their spouses, Diane and Larry Sussman of DE, Bradley and Sharon Chernoff of Fulton, Charles and Barbara Chernoff of Skaneateles, and Hal and Nancy Chernoff of MD; his sisters-in-law, Betsey Cooper of Oneonta, Ruth Martin of Milford, and Carol and Ward Green of Schenevus; his former son-in-law, Robert Diana of Vernon; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Cooper was predeceased by his daughter, Jan Diana, in 1999; his grandson, Kipp Cooper, Jr., in 1996; and his brother, James Cooper, PhD, in 2003. Services with legion honors will be held at the convenience of the family at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, Waterville, with Pastor Ed Townsend officiating. There are no calling hours. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the entire staff of the Harding Nursing Home, Dr. David Petrie and Dr. Eric Voss for all their wonderful care and attention.
