Dewitt Slay Obituary



SLAY DEWITT SLAY "Dick" (Age 80) Of Haig Point, SC, died peacefully, Thursday, April 30, 2009, at his home on Daufuskie Island, SC, after a long battle with small cell lung cancer. Dick graduated from the University of Maryland in 1950 and then worked for almost 29 years at the Washington Star in Washington DC. He was a multi-talented sports writer who covered both high schools and colleges and served as college sports editor 1979 to 1981. He also covered auto racing, pro football and then specialized in golf from 1966 to 1981 ending up as Golf Editor. After the Star closed in 1981 he worked for Mutual Broadcasting System, the Senior PGATour, and then the main copy desk of the Washington Times where he remained until his retirement in April 1994. He also served as the executive secretary of the Society of Seniors from 1983 until 2000, where he was the Founding Editor of the Society of Seniors Newsletter. Among his many honors he could include President of the Southern Conference Sportswriters Association, board member Golf Writers Association of America, and winning coach of boys baseball in the Montgomery County league, 1963 to 1965. He moved to Haig Point in December 1993. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betsy; son Mike; daughter-in-law Patti; grandchildren Joshua and Rebecka; grandson-in-law Prakash Manglanathan; sister-in-law Ernie Smith; and numerous nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 17 at 4:30 p.m. on Daufuskie Island at the First Union African Baptist Church with interment of his ashes in their cemetery. The service will be followed by a celebration of his life at Haig Point. If you are coming from out-of-town please let the family know in order to arrange for transportation to the island. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, PO Box 3827, Bluffton, SC 29910.
