Evelyn (Lee) Harris Haller

Evelyn passed away Thursday, March 27th at Bryan West Hospital after a brief illness, shortly after her 88th birthday.

Born in Chicago in 1937 to Charles Leo and Evelyn Qualey Harris, she spent time in Chicago, Ill.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Bridgeport, Conn. and Atlanta, Ga. She earned her bachelor's degree from Barat College of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Ill. in 1958 and her PhD in English from Emory University in Atlanta in 1968.

After a brief stint at Creighton University, Evelyn became a member of the faculty of the English Department at Doane University where she remained a fixture for more than 40 years. A scholar of Willa Cather, Virginia Wolff and Erza Pound, she sought to examine the connections of these authors to contemporary artistic movements in dance, quilt making and the visual arts as well as their connections to non-western and per-modern modes of thought.

Over the years, Evelyn travelled the world and had a particular fondness for Japan, India, England, southern Europe and Egypt. Several of her former students and colleagues became lifelong friends and companions on these journeys. She was an avid fan of film and theatrical performances and regularly visited the Ross.

She will be remembered fondly by her wide circle of friends, relatives and acquaintances. She is survived by her two sons, Scott Geoffrey George Haller and Charles Benet Haller.

A Rosary will be held at Butherus, Maser & Love at 40th and A at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2nd and Funeral Services will be held at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 3rd. Interment at Calvary Cemetery.
