Stanley Shakespeare Obituary

Former Hurricane falls off boat, drowns

BY SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN

Former University of Miami wide receiver Stanley Shakespeare, who played on the Hurricanes' 1983 national championship football team, died Tuesday after he fell off his fishing boat and drowned in the Jupiter Inlet.

Shakespeare was 42.

Shakespeare's friend and fishing companion, listed as Marvin Weston in a statement released by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, were fishing in the inlet "when the boat hit a huge wave, causing Shakespeare to be ejected from the boat.

"Weston told deputies Shakespeare told him to turn off the boat. He did, however Shakespeare drifted further away from the boat and was unable to get out of the water. Weston tried to turn the boat back on, but didn't know how to do so. Weston said he was going to throw Shakespeare a life jacket, but the current had carried him very far away."

The police statement said Weston flagged down another boat. The radio on the second boat didn't work. A third boater called for help at about 1:47 p.m., approximately 30 minutes after Shakespeare fell from the boat. A Marine Unit deputy found Shakespeare face down in the water.

He was pronounced dead at 3:06 p.m. The violent crimes division of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said it is treating the incident as an accidental drowning.

I am saddened to just have learned of Stanley Shakespeare's death. We were fellow UM 'Canes classmates. I wondered what he was doing these many years after we graduated, only to get this shocking news instead. He was so down-to-earth, and I considered him a friend. I look forward to seeing him again in Heaven. Also, may the Lord Jesus Christ comfort/strengthen all of his loved ones and be their Savior, Lord, and God now and forever!

I last saw Stanley when we were in the 9th grade back in Andalusia, AL. We went to grammar and middle school together and played football and basketball together throughout the years. Stanley was an incredible person - great athlete, great friend, and a great person. I wasn't surprised to see him playing for the University of Miami and doing well. Stanley was the type of person you tell your children about knowing, and when my son was around 12 or so he was searching for Stanley on the Internet and ran across the article about his tragic death. My heart just literally sank. I'll never forget him or his incredible friendship. God bless and keep you my brother.

I haven't seen Mr. Shakespeare in years, but I recently heard about his passing. He hired me for my first real job working at Publix, and although I never really knew much about his sports career, I admired his character and attitude towards things. He always had us cracking up at work and I admired him a lot. He was by far the best manager I had there, because you always knew he was looking out for you. I'll miss him.

That night in January at the Orange Bowl versus Nebraska was the single most electrifying night of sport I have ever experienced.

Stanley's memory is burned in my memory forever.

I recently heard of Stanleys passing and was saddened by the news.

My condolences to his family and friends.

It has taken me a while to post anything here. Even though I had not talked to Stanley in years, he was a star he was running that football for the Miami. My father use to take me to some of his games when he came up north when I was a kid. Stanley was bigger than life, and would always give me something of his. During my years in the Army many have asked me about Stanley, and I was always proud to say he was my first cousin. I know he is looking down on his family with that big smile. Stanley, I will never forget you.

I was a Resident Assistant in the University of Miami dormitories in the summer of 1984. I was a film-making major and was assigned (of all places) to the floor occupied by the football players attending summer classes. I was hesistant, shocked, nervous. At first. Over the course of that summer, I became acquainted with several players who resided there and visited. My recollection of Stanley Shakespeare was of a pleasant and polite young man, soft-spoken and courteous. He was, perhaps, the primary reason that my opinion of collegiate athletes changed. He was no brute nor spoiled prima donna. I was saddened upon reading of his passing, largely because the world is diminished by the loss of so gracious an individual. My deepest condolences to his family, his friends, and his teammates.

Dear Family, Only today I heard of the tragic news about Stanley "Shake" Shakespeare. I worked with him in 1989 or something like that and he and I became good friends. He was a great guy and over the next 15 years I would see him from time to time at Publix and then Home Depot. He was a GREAT guy and I'm still realing at the news. My husband met a friend who played ball with him and somehow they got on the subject of your husband and you dad. Tears are streaming down my face now as I'm sure has happened to you countless times in the past 10 months. I hope you know how deeply sorry I am for your loss. I was just thinking about him the other day, telling my son about what a good person he was. He had a beautiful smile and loved his family very much, he always talked about you when I saw him. He was so proud of his sons and beamed when he talked about you. Again, I am deeply sorry for your loss and I know he's looking down on you all and smiling that smile. Be safe, strong and happy. Wow! this news has blown me away. I loved stanley, I wore #6 in high school and college just because of stanley. I loved watching him line up opposite eddie brown and they would do their thing. Before there was a Michael Irvin or any other great receiver from miami stanley set the bar and he set it high.

I am so sorry, I to lost a brother tragicly

Dear Shakespeare Family,

As a complete outsider to your family I send my deepest condolensces. I was shocked when I heard of your loss.

Growing up in Penn State country as a boy, I quickly became a Miami Hurricane fan when my sister attended UM and father moved to Miami, FL in 1978.

I attended my first Hurricane game in 1979. Stanley was a tremendous player on those early 1980's teams and he was my favorite player due to his athleticism and high energy on the field.

Number 6 provided me with so much enjoyment during my youthful days watching him play football. I wanted you to know a complete stranger enjoyed your son's talents from a far. God Bless.

dear shakesphere family, when julie stewart whom i've known at jfk hospital for many years told me that she was stanley's sister-in-law i knew i wanted to express to you my deepest sympathy for your loss. i had read about stanley in the newpaper and my husband, bill, who is a high school baseball coach, has followed stanley's career in football. i know what a good man stanley was, and that's a legacy to carry on for your children. just know he will be the first one waiting for you with open arms when you are reunited in heaven some day. may god bless you and keep you in the days and months to come. corinne harvey, rn at jfk medical center.

Marilyn,

I worked with Stan at Publix on Northlake Blvd for several years. He was a joy to work with and for. Stan would never call me by my first name, he would always address me as Ms. Robinson. My memory of Stan is his smile.

Marilyn, below I close with this prayer for you and your family.

Bless those who mourn, eternal God,

with the comfort of your love

that they may face each new day with hope and the certainty that nothing can destroy the good that has been given. May their memories become joyful, their days enriched with friendship, and their lives encircled by your love.

God Bless.

Dear Marylin,

You are one of the most giving and caring people I have ever met. May your heart forever hold the wonderful love you and Stanley shared. It is truly a blessing to have had that kind of love in your life to now reflect on and give you strength.

May you and your sons find comfort in the memories that will be yours to cherish always, support in those around you who share in your loss and find peace in the promise that life is everlasting.

Marylin,Steven and Sean,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.We were so saddened when we heard about Stan.He was a great friend and we really miss him. I remember the first time I met him at Publix 434. It was so neat to talk to Stan about the '83 Canes. Stan was so humble. I always told Stan how much of an impact his team had on the South Florida community after they won the championship. It brought us all together for something for us to enjoy.I am a better person from having the privilege of getting to know and be friends with Stan.Lisa and I thank you so much for the time we got to spend with your family at the Canes spring game. It was something I will always remember. That's just the type of person Stan was.

God Bless all of you,

Dear Marilyn, Steven and family,

How sad is the day we must say goodbye? Yet hope fills us all with life to breathe again. This hope comes from the love and prayers of people whom we have touched. You Marilyn, have touched many. Remember me, Lisa Keough? I was Steven's Guidance Counselor at Palm Beach Gardens High School, and one of your patients at St. Mary's. We spent some "quality" time together when I was in the Antepartem unit waiting for my twin girls to be born. You were a tireless supporter of us "future mommies", many of whom from that experience, I befriended. But as God chose to take one of my angels, He has also handpicked Stanley.

Bless you and your family during this difficult time. It helps me to rememeber these words:

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow

I am the sunlight on ripend grain. I am the gentle autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush.

Of quiet birds in circled flight

I am the soft star that shines at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there,

I did not die.

With sympathy and warmth,

Lisa Keough and family (husband Tim and daughter Chelsea, now 3 1/2 years old)

My condolinces to the Shakespeare family. I first met Stanley in 1989. We worked together at Publix Supermarkets. We hit it off right away. He never had a bad day. We bacame very good friends and played basketball every monday. I could never beat him. After basketball we would go to his house for lunch or an iced tea. It was then that I met his wife Marlynn and son Steven. "Shake" always had a smile on his face and put one on mine. I loved hearing old football stories, but more importantly Stanley loved telling family stories. I am honered to have been his friend for over 15 years. After I left Publix we still kept in touch. He was a great friend and family man. I will never forget his smile. It was a privalage to have known him. Thank you Stanley. God bless you. Brian Mercurio.Lake Worth Fla.

The news of Stanley's passing came as a total shock to me and my family. Stanley and I were recruited to UM in 1981 and we grew togehter as friends and teammates coming from Palm Beach County.

His smile and his work ethic were incredible. He was full of life. I can still picture him breaking the huddle, number 6, and running to his position.

I also remember the Duke game when he ran for a 47 yard touchdown to p ut us ahead for good.

I think of Stanley all the time on my way to work. I go by Lake Monroe in Sanford and see all the people fishing.

He was a great man, teammate and friend. I will miss him dearly!

I have read all of the entries from people all over the continent whose lives you have touched and I am in awe. Rest now. You were so tired. You worked and played so hard. Rest, Uncle Stanley and know that you are loved and missed. God bless your soul. I know you're in heaven sporting your Angel wings!!!:)

I was very fortunate to have played football with Stanley, who was the embodiment of class. Not only was he a National Champion football player, but most importantly he was a World Champion person. He will certainly be missed. This is a sad day for the Hurricane family.

God Bless....

Marylin,

I remember well talking to Stanley on campus after the games at UM. He always had this smile on his face when talking about how much fun he was having in his life. He made us proud.

We are all truly sorry for you and your family. He was a great guy. We'll all miss #6.

Marylin,

My deepest prayers go out to you and your family. I grew up with Stanley in Andalusia, AL.(before he moved to FL) We had so much fun as young boys, we would race bare-footed down the hot streets of Andalusia. I could never beat him. I will always cherish the time we spent together as kids.. Stanley, You will always be missed. Curtis "Curley" Brown...

In the 80's things were different. No ESPN and such for sports. I was in 9th grade when they won the championship and all I wanted to be was Stanley S. They made me and my family have good times together watching. It was different then. He was a hero to me!

I heard the sad news a couple days ago. After reading through these guest listings, it is quite obvious that Stanley touched many lives...many of whom he had never met formally. My thoughts and prayers go out to Stanley Shakespeare's immediate and extended family.
