Eddie Albert Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 27, 2005.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Eddie Albert, the actor best known as the constantly befuddled city slicker-turned-farmer in television's "Green Acres," has died. He was 99.

Albert, who appeared in movies and television for more than 50 years, died of pneumonia Thursday at his home in the Pacific Palisades area, in the presence of his longtime caregivers and son Edward, family friend Dick Guttman said Friday.

Albert achieved his greatest fame on "Green Acres" as Oliver Douglas, a New York lawyer who settles in a farm town with his glamorous wife, played by Eva Gabor, and finds himself perplexed by the antics of a host of rural residents, including a pig named Arnold Ziffel.

Albert was nominated for Academy Awards as supporting actor in "Roman Holiday" (1953) and "The Heartbreak Kid" (1972).

The actor moved smoothly from the Broadway stage to movies to television. Besides his 1965-1971 run in "Green Acres," he costarred on TV with Robert Wagner in "Switch" from 1975 to 1978 and was a semi-regular on "Falcon Crest" in 1988.

He was a tireless conservationist, crusading for endangered species, healthful food, cleanup of Santa Monica Bay pollution and other causes. He had remained healthy even in old age.

"Three days ago he was playing basketball in his wheelchair with his granddaughter," Guttman said. "He stayed very vital."

A little known fact that is seldom mentioned, Lieutenant Edward Albert Heimberger was awarded the Bronze Star with V for valor during the Battle for Tarawa in1943. As the commander of a Navy assault boat, he was able to rescue 40+ Marines who were stranded under fire on the reef due to low tide!
After the war, he returned to acting and dropped his last name, which had been often mispronounced!

One of the best actors ever in television. True to method, he brought comic relief to many, especially rural people who sympathized w his character's hilarious frustrations on Green Acres. At 99 still a great loss to his family, his fans and the conservation of the country. My condolences to his family. He will be very much missed.

It is certainly nice to know many people loved and appreciated you as an actor. It was my honor to be called your friend, having visited in your home on many occasions. The many conversations we had over lunch at your home are times I will never forget.

Thank you for also allowing me to share with you God's Word. You were very kind hearted man, always open to listening and learning. I am certain you are now in the presence of the Lord, having received Jesus Christ into your heart as Lord and Savior of your life.

I look forward to the day we are all reunited in that heavenly reunion. Thank you for your service to our nation and for being a great friend to myself.

Eddie Albert is one of those actors that you really miss once they're gone. Eddie Albert was humorous in some of the parts he played and being so may have masked his superb acting skills. He just seemed like an all-around good guy on camera. It would be hard for me to believe that he was anything but in real life. As I think back I've seen him in so many different movies. Especially some World War II features. I'm so glad he lived to a ripe old age. I loved that movie Roman Holiday. He was great in it. I'm sure many will agree with me when I say "We miss you Eddie."

As a Bellman/College student at the fine hotel you stayed at in Kansas City in 1980, standing with the Doorman I asked you as you made your way to rehearsal if there was a Bellman in your play (Room Service), you replied "There is now!" and told your son (Eddie Albert, Jr.) to provide tickets to all the hotel employees. I went with my wife. Wonderful. And I remember how no one was allowed to call your room except the Conservation organization you supported. You, Ed Herlihy, and Patrick Duffy, were all great guests. I'll always remember your stay.

I don't know if this will be seen or not, but I must say that Mr. Albert's most noteworthy achievement was not his Hollywood career. This man was a hero and Bronze Star recipient. I just saw a documentary about JPAC's efforts to bring back all of the Marines' remains from Tarawa. Several commented on how many dead and wounded Marines he picked up. A true hero first, an actor second.

Eddie, You were great playing the part of Emanuel Swedenborg (1689-1772) in the "Man who had to Know." Hopefully, your role in the movie brought more visibility to this great person who was a virtual genuise, scientist, philosopher and theologian. And, most of all a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear Mr.Albert:

When I was a kid, I would never miss the Green Acres. Along with your spouse, Mrs. Gabore, you were this Big-City Lawyer who decided it was high time to breath the Fresh Air and to be in tune with nature.
I used to have a big kick out of the show because my folks had done just that: they had decided to buy a farm and just like Mr. Albert and Mrs.Gabore, they were the laughing stock of the area. Physically, they also looked alike,Mom was a blonde and my father, salt-and -pepper.

Thank you for all the memorable moments of great laughter!
Sincerely,
Paul

For Eddie...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Resurrection Promise

Do not cry as your loved ones pass,

God has promised it will not last,

The time is coming with all things new,

And your loved ones brought back to you,

Revelation 21: verses three and four,

States that death and sorrow will be no more,

Remember Jesus said his friend was asleep,

We will be called back to be his sheep,

Yes it hurts to lose someone,

But soon every bad thing will be undone,

Trust in Jehovah with all your heart,

He’s been with us from the start,

So as we go on in this old life,

Remember he will rid us of this pain and strife,

Take his hand and see his power,

When he brings his judgment hour,

Those in the memorials tombs will come out,

We will all be happy and able to shout,

Look what God has went and done,

He's brought back Mothers, Fathers, Daughters and Sons.

Oliver Wendel Douglas and Green Acres. When I attended law school I finally understood the inside joke when I took Property class. For hypothetical pieces of land they would call them Red Acre, Blue Acre and GREEN Acres! IT finally all made sense with his name! Awesome varied parts like the excellent man and actor he was in such a long career. My love to his family.

With Eddie Albert gone, it is like tearing out a page of our life.

In the late summer of 1949, my wife and I were in N.Y.C., It was Nita's first trip to the big city and I made it a point that she would see some celebrities.

We were walking down 5th Avenue, she began pulling my arm and pointing at an approaching fiqure
repeating about 3 times,"he is somebody" We saw him in "Brother Rat" but could not remember his name. He had a big laugh about it all as he passed us, he went into a drug store about the time that his name came to us.
To get another look at him, we went back to the drug store entrance to have another look at a live movie star. As we glanced in, he was sitting on the third stool, leaning backward, knowing that we would take another look. As he did,he, again had a big laugh
