Michael Vale Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 28, 2005.
NEW YORK (AP) - Michael Vale, the actor best known for his portrayal of a sleepy-eyed Dunkin' Donuts baker who said "Time to make the doughnuts," has died. He was 83.

Vale died Saturday in New York City of complications from diabetes, according to son-in law Rick Reil.

Vale's long-running character, "Fred the Baker," for the doughnut maker's ad campaign lasted 15 years until he retired in 1997.

Canton, Massachusetts-based Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement that Vale's character "became a beloved American icon that permeated our culture and touched millions with his sense of humor and humble nature."

Vale was born in Brooklyn and studied acting at the Dramatic Workshop in New York City with classmates Tony Curtis, Ben Gazzara and Rod Steiger.

A veteran of the Broadway stage, film and television, Vale appeared in more than 1,300 TV commercials.

Michael was in an Alka-Seltzer advertisement filming a fictitious advertisement saying, "Mama mia, that's a spicy meatball!", over and over again I was just a kid and I thought it was the funniest thing! Comedy requires perfect delivery and timing. It's not the line, its how it delivered that makes it funny. Michael was the best comedian ever.

TO: Mr. Vale Family,
God looked around his garden
And found an empty space.
Then He looked down upon this earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful
He only takes the best.
God Bless,

Mr. Ben,
Memory can tell us only what we were,
In company with those we loved;
It cannot help us find out what each of us,
Alone, must now become.
Yet, no person is really alone;
Those who live no more still echo
Within our thoughts and words,
And what they did has become
Woven into what we are.
God Bless,
Kimtraila

For Michael...you caused people
to eat tons of donuts after
your sensational commercial
"Time To Make The Donuts."

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I am a nightshift nurse, and every morning before we start to give out our medications, the other nurse who works with me always quotes "Time to make the donuts". That saying brings back fond memories of childhood.

Mike put a smile on America's face.

God Bless him and his family.

To The Family of Michael Vale:

Your husband will always remain in my memories as The Dunkin Donuts Man. I remember going to Dunkin Donuts with my father, who I miss so very much. He always would say, as we went to Dunkin Donuts, It's time to make the donuts.

Ivy and Family,

Your dad was such a wonderful man. While we all remember him as Fred the Baker, I remember watching football with your dad and brother when we were in Massachoo for your wedding. I know how much you will all miss him. Ivy, I remember thinking what wonderful family and friends both you and Rick have. May you all find comfort in your fondest memories and in the hearts and hugs of your friends and family.

Much Love to all,

My sincerest condolences to the entire family. What comfort it must bring, in your time of grieving, to know that your loved one gave so much joy to so many.

What a wonderful tribute the Dunkin Donuts Company gave to Mr. Vale by compiling that touching commercial. It was comforting to us, his fans, to see that sweet character once again.

I was an Art Director on several commercials featuring the talented Mike Vale. I was working for an ad agency during the eighties on "The Sound Playground" account. In these commercials Mike was simply referred to as the sound playground guy. These spots were shot while Mike was still under contract to Dunkin Donuts. He was actually well known for this regional character before he was the Dunkin Donuts guy, therefore it was not a conflict.

I had the privilege of spending a great deal of time with him and we would discuss movies, plays, food etc. One time he requested sushi for lunch and I was given the task of finding it in Hartford CT. Anyone who knows that city surely would understand that I was given an impossible mission. I wound up driving about 40 miles to get it and he was very grateful. I also remember him telling me that he's cried at the final scene of Chaplin's film, "City Lights" and said that no other movie has moved him as much as that one did.

Uncle Michael was a great man. He was bigger than life to all who knew him, but to his family he was just Uncle Michael. We didn't get to see him often, but we did get to see him at the occasional family functions. (He always tried to make the time to be with the family.) His great comical sense of humor was not from a script, he was a truly talented man who was always making us laugh, even if the joke was on him.

My thoughts and prayers to the family of Michael Vale. The Dunkin Donuts commerial that he appeared in, always made me smile knowing that at times we all have that sleepy "time to make the donuts" event in our lives. It was that commerial that made him more human to us all then we realized. It is true that the commerial will always remain with me. But it is more true that Mr. Vale's loveable, positive, yet sleep nature with remain with me.

Mr. Vale, you never knew how much you touched other peoples' lives. Yet I can hope his family realizes this now.
