For Maggie... Army women's basketball coach who led the Black Knights to their NCAA tournament debut.
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I already had a message posted last April 2006, and the thought of Coach Maggie came out of nowhere, but pretty sure it was from Heaven. I served in the US Army for 21 years.. so in a way, you were really my coach. Goodbye again!

The smile and positive energy you give off in the clip when your team carried you off the court is priceless. My daughter and son love the clip. They are 15 and 13 and learned a tough lesson in life- sometimes bad things happen to very good people. We've tried to stress the celebration of her life and success after a brief period of mourning. To the Dixon family, Maggie's inspiration will be eternal. God Bless.

To the Dixon Family,
I saw Maggie's picture last night on TV during the NCAA tournament coverage. Even though I had not seen her face in over 20 years...not since the 3rd grade...I instantly recognized her. I am truly sorry to hear about her passing, but I am happy to read about the remarkable life she lived. My deepest sympathies to all of her family and friends.

To the entire Dixon family,
I have loved basketball since i was a kid. And as i have gotten older, i have appreciated the good things that happen in sports. 7 years ago i lost my grandfather truly, my best friend. we talked twice a day, did everything together even being 80 minutes away from me. As March rolled along, i picked up on one maggie dixon. I had known who Jamie was, but never this outgoing, energetic, beautiful girl. As i followed this story, many friends called me as i had them following as well, stating " she seems like a casey cloan." And seeing someone who enjoys every minute of there life, is rare to find at our age. Seeing jamie and maggie on tv together brought such a smile to my face, and brought back lots of thoughts of how unique a relationship with a loved one can be. When i woke up on Friday, april 7th, i knew what the day was. My grandparents would've been married 55 years that day. Instead nana and i would be together for the day, and simply make the most of it. But the only tears of sadness that ran down my face that day were from the shock of a lifetime i found on the news. I was, and like you still can't believe what occured. I can't imagine the pain, and for Jamie, who had that one person everyday to count on. "unique" a word that comes to mind, just as it did with my grandfather and i. I can honestly say at age 24, i find it rare to find someone like maggie. I have her as my screensaver at home, lifted up on cadets soldiers. I just know she was a special girl, the facts are all there. I know there has been talk of a tournament for her. I look online often to see any news about it. Tonight, i saw my 1st clue. Sunday, november 12th, the maggie dixon classic. Even from the small town of northbridge outside of Boston, i look forward to finding tickets, and being part of a special day, with one very special girl being remembered. I also look forward to paying my respects. I pray for all of you, and for Maggie, sundays at church. It's amazing how one person, you never even knew, can become such an inspiration. I wish you all continued success, and know that pain can never go away. But i also say thanks, for having one wonderful daughter/sister. She has touched many hearts, even those who never knew her.
sincerely,
casey McKeon (northbridge massachusetts)

I extend my sympathies to the entire Dixon family. We have something in common. My 25 year old daughter died almost 3 years ago from a heart condition called ARVD. Amy was an athlete and a basketball player as well. Her death was so sudden and unexpected, as was Maggie's.
This path that we walk is a very lonely road and one that will never feel right. I am sorry that you have to be part of this group that nobody wants to join, that of a bereaved parent.
I wish I could tell you that your pain will stop, but it doesn't. It does change however and eventually we can smile and laugh again...but we are not the same people that we were before we buried our children.
I am so sorry for your loss.

I only met Maggie one time, but will always remember that big old friendly smile. Coach Bruno introduced us and she talked as if we were old friends. Being a former Blue Demon basketball player, we had that "family" connection immediately and I could not have been more proud when she took the head coaching job, while being so young. She did DePaul proudly! I send sympathy and thanks to the family of Maggie Dixon. The world has lost a great coach that never saw the greatness that she deserved, but God know's what He is doing...that I am certain of.

I would like to offer my most sincere sympathy to the Dixon family. I knew Maggie during her time at De Paul, and I was absoulutely floored when I heard of her condition and of her untimely passing. Maggie was a beautiful person and a wonderful competitor and she truly embodied selflessness, grace, and kindness. I last saw and spoke with Maggie at the Doug Bruno Camp early last summer and I could see that the fire and anticipation for next season was already there. This was long before she took the position at Army, and it honestly had me grinning from ear to ear to hear that not only was she now a head coach, but that she had also achieved so much in such a short time. Again my deepest condolences to the Dixon family and to the Army and De Paul communities.

I first met Maggie when she was a freshman at USD, she was a close friend of my son. The first time that I met her, I knew that she was special! Over the years I would watch her play for USD and when she played in Northern California I would go to the game and visit with her afterwards. When she went to coach at De Paul I would tell her that she could win every game but the two they played against the University of Houston, my school. She would laugh and then go out and beat us! When she got the Army job I was so proud of her. I watched the Patriot League championship game and came off of the sofa screaming when they won and she was mobbed and lifted up by the cadets.
A month before she died she sent me an Army shirt and a note. I will cherish that shirt and note that she sent to me as a wonderful rememberance of a special person. A person who was destined for greatness and who left us too soon!

Dear Maggie,
Thank you for being my friend, my "partner in crime", and my shoulder to cry on when I needed someone to talk to. I'll never forget the memories that pour in and out of my head everyday. I know I cant "talk" to you the same way I used to, yet I talk to you more now than ever. In fact I can still hear your voice today- and I want to tell you that I love you, I miss you and I will never forget you. You were a great coach, the best I've ever known. But honestly, you were a 100 times better friend and person than anything else. And when I do come to see you one day Im know I'll say to myself "Im going, going, back, back to Maggie's". I love you too!

To The Dixon Family:
I attended High School with Maggie (NDHS Class of 1994). She was a remarkable individual. Her passing was nothing short of a tragedy. The way in which she lived her life was a tribute to her family. Her life will be celebrated by the ones she left behind. Her memory will remain in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to have met her. My prayers are with you.

I had the fortunate opportunity to watch Maggie develop as a student, athlete, friend, and individual while she was at USD. Maggie was truly a shining light; a daily example of enthusiasm, love, laughter and dedication. She is greatly missed yet she will undoubtedly live on in all whose lives she touched. May the peace of the Lord rest in you all as you grieve, cherish, remember, laugh, love and find the path ahead.

We are Pittsburgh natives and were devastated by the news of Maggie's death. It touched us deeply. Our daughter, Dayna is the Head Women's coach at Cornell University. They played Army the beginning of the season. Dayna told us about meeting her at the Women's Final Four. They just talked & talked about everything. Dayna said she felt like she knew Maggie all her life after their conversation. Please accept our Deepest Sympathy. May God give you the strength & faith to endure this terrible loss. Thank you all for your support over the loss of Maggie Dixon. We lost our 92 year old coach, Ray Meyer, three weeks and a day before we lost our 28 year old coach, Maggie Dixon. Ray and Maggie were close and did share a bond through our great sport of basketball and through teaching. Ray was just one of many that were touched by Maggie and Maggie was just one of many touched by Ray.
These have been a tough couple of weeks for all of us at DePaul. As tough as the loss of Maggie has been on all of us at DePaul, the loss for siblings, Jamie and Julie, and for parents, Jim and Marge has to be so very much more difficult to comprehend.
The outpouring of support has been phenomenal and, while there will never be another Maggie Dixon, this support has been of great value to all of us. I applaud you and thank you for creating this, Maggie Dixon web site.
Rather than try to include all of the cards and emails and phone messages that we have received, I have simply listed below the so many names of people that have expressed their sympathy for the loss of Maggie Dixon. The below list is not even close to complete as the outpouring continues as I write this email.
I will attempt to add the names of many more people that continue to send their condolences. My own personal message for your board follows.
How does one deal with the death of someone as alive and good and vibrant and full of life as Maggie Dixon? We can choose to be angry; we can choose to constantly ask why, we can choose to be bitter. Maggie Dixon understood in her young life that any of these previous choices destroy those of us that are angry, that are bitter, that are in a constant state of why.
Maggie Dixon would not want to see any of us destroyed. Rather than destroy ourselves through anger and bitterness, Maggie would expect us to be alive and vibrant and good and full of life and full of energy.
Maggie Dixon’s short life was a lesson. We can choose to remember the great times of Maggie’s life and live her lesson or we can choose to be angry and bitter. I know what the Maggie Dixon I was blessed to know would expect us to choose!
Again, so many thanks for all of the support!!!

Maggie,
From the time I first saw you play as a young recruit and saw your Dad pacing the sidelines with that look of pride on his face and met your Mom with that bright smiling face and hug of welcome, I knew I would do whatever I could to have you come and play at USD. I thank your family for allowing me the time I was able to spend coaching you at San Diego. I was lucky to have been able to keep in touch with you on the coaching recruiting trail. Even at the Adidas camp when you helped me figure out the bracket. The teacher becoming the student and the student taking pity on the old coach!!! Each day since your passing I have remembered a lttle of your time with me and I smile and I probably will do that for the rest of my life as that is the profound impact you have had on my life and so many others. I love you Maggie.

When I read the news I was in total shock, tears filled my eyes. I was so excited to follow her in the years to come and then in a second, it was all ended. I too feel as though I have gotten a glimpse into who Maggie was as a person from reading about her. What a gift the world was given to have been blessed with her presence for 28 years. Twenty eight years is just too few. I never knew her but I will never forget her.
To her family, friends and players: You are all in my prayers, may God give you the strength to get through this difficult time. You are not alone in your grief, people who never met her grieve her loss.
Rest in Peace Maggie! You leave behind a glorious trail of memories.
I hope you're enjoying shooting hoops with the angels :)

I was a teammate and friend of Maggie's at USD. Some of my funniest and most memorable moments from my playing days involve Maggie. She was always such a light and an inspiration for me and the rest of the USD team.
I have enjoyed following Maggie's progress since then and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to watch her coach in person several times over the last two years. I was fortunate enough to spend time with her and watch her coach against Tennessee in the tournament. Maggie was such a blessing and I will always cherish the memories that I have of her. Maggie's memory will truly live on forever and she will continue to be an inspiration for me and many others.

Maggie was one of my first friends at USD when we met during O-week our freshman year. She is one reason why I'm in coaching today by getting me to be a practice player for the team. This year, I was very fortunate to have been reunited on the sidelines with her when Cornell and Army met in a non-conference game. Though we didn't spend much time together after college because of our coaching duties, it's the time we spent together at USD that I will charish and remember most. Maggie, thank you for being you...something no one knows unless they've known you. You will never be forgotten - Class of '99!!
To Maggie's family, I now know, after years of just hearing about you, the reason why Maggie was the way she was...her life is a testiment to what you've instilled in her all those years. Thank you!

I will always hold the memories I have of Maggie close to my heart. I love you and will miss you Maggie!

I would like to send out my heartfelt condolences to the Dixon family. Like many of the people who have posted here, I never had the pleasure of meeting her in person. I became captivated by her just from all the media coverage she received over the last few weeks. I was especially touched by the endless amount of love she had for her brother Jamie. I know many people who either are not close with their siblings or don't speak to them at all, so to see a pair of siblings with such a strong bond is truly touching. With all the negativity and hatred in the world today, we need more people like Maggie to take on leadership roles and bring out the best in others.
Someone as spscial as Maggie should
never be forgotten. I sincerely hope that her players at Army and Depaul remember what she taught them and carry on her legacy.

I never knew Maggie personally--but she epitomized the spirit of what West Point is all about. I can't even imagine the sorrow you are experiencing.
May her spirit roam the sidelines in heaven forever.

I would like to extend my condolences to the Dixon family. It has been a very long time, but I remember Maggie as a young child visiting Throggs Neck with her family. They would visit the Henderson family(Tom, Eileen, Jonothan, Caitlin and Liz) and being neighbors with them, I would always visit at the same time the Dixons were there. Those days were so long ago, and are in my mind in a vague way. I am truly sorry for your loss.

My deepest condolences to the family and close friends of Maggie. She was an inspiration to many in the basketball world females and males, A true competitor of the sport. Even in her last minutes on earth she was helping a friend who was crying cause of losing their job. I hope that while my daughter grows up, she has the passion and sincare like Maggie did on and off the court.

It was a wonderful and inspirational funeral Mass yesterday at St. Charles. What wonderful memories and a beautiful tribute. I felt privileged that I was able to attend. To the Dixon Family: I grieve for your loss of Maggie and pray that you will receive peace from the knowledge that she was so well loved by those whose lives she touched. I often visit the cemetery at West Point to honor classmates of my son and heroes killed in Vietnam and other wars. I will also visit Maggie's grave and think it is very appropriate that she will be buried among the many people who served West Point with distinction.

My heart breaks for you as you grieve the loss of your precious daughter and sister. I lost my 23 year old son to a heart valve defect in January 2005 while he was traveling with the University of Texas Longhorn band to the presidential inauguration in Washington D.C. I miss him everyday, but I know they are in a better place and will joyfully welcome us when it is our time to join them in eternal life. God bless you in the days ahead.

It will be the little things that we will remember, the quiet moments, the smiles, the laughter. And although it may seem hard right now, it will be the memories of these little things that help to push away the pain and bring the smiles back again.
Praying for family and friends to comfort you, faith to uphold you, and loving memories to heal your heart.

My sympathy and prayers to Maggie's family.I met Maggie through my dear friend Shannon Reidy, head womens basketball Coach at Loyola Univ. in Chicago.I met Maggie when she came downstate to see Marian Catholic in the State finals as Shannon was Coach at Marian until last year. Maggie and Coach Bruno from De Paul came to "cheer" us on. I feel so lucky to have met Maggie then and several other occasions as well, for she was classy, funny, inspiring and someone I knew was a perfect role model for all the ladies she coached. When the Army team and fans carried her off the court, I cheered for her, just as she had cheered for us.With her finger pointing towards the heavens,I guess God grabbed a hold, and took her home. How blessed we all are for knowing Maggie.. how devastated we are. Good bless you Maggie, you will forever be missed.

Please accept our deepest sympathy on the untimely passing of Maggie. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Dixon family.
We had the chance to meet Maggie in Chicago when she was with DePaul. Our 12 year daughter, Julie, has attended three Doug Bruno camps and many DePaul women's games. Maggie was one in a million and will be sorely missed.
Coach Bruno gives three awards at his camp. They are in honor of special women who are no longer with us. My first thought was there will be a fourth award in honor of Maggie. It will be given to the girl who demonstrates leadership, focus and does it with a smile on her face.
I was surprised to learn Maggie was only 28 years old. She has done more in her short life than most of us could do in a lifetime. May you find comfort in knowing what a positive influence she was to so many young women.
God bless you.

My sincere sympathy goes out to the entire Dixon family. I do not know any of you, but from what I have read about Maggie, you raised a very fine and remarkable daughter. Very sad to lose her so soon. She accomplished more in her short life than many do in a long lifetime. May all these notes of condolences help to comfort her family. I hope that there are many happy memories to bring a smile to the hearts of all who loved Maggie.
