Earl Woods Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 3, 2006.
Earl Woods, who was more determined to raise a good son than a great golfer and became the role model, architect and driving force behind Tiger Woods' phenomenal career, died Wednesday morning at his home in Cypress, Calif. He was 74.

"My dad was my best friend and greatest role model, and I will miss him deeply," Tiger Woods said on his Web site. "I'm overwhelmed when I think of all of the great things he accomplished in his life. He was an amazing dad, coach, mentor, soldier, husband and friend. I wouldn't be where I am today without him, and I'm honored to continue his legacy of sharing and caring."

Woods was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1998 and was treated with radiation, but the cancer returned in 2004 and spread throughout his body. Last month, he was too frail to travel to the Masters for the first time. His son finished tied for third.

The last tournament Woods attended was the Target World Challenge in December 2004, when his son rallied to win and then donated $1.25 million to the Tiger Woods Foundation that his father helped him establish.

Earl Woods was more than a golf dad, more than a zealous father who lived vicariously through his son's achievements.

He had played catcher for Kansas State, the first black to play baseball in the Big Eight Conference, and he had been a Green Beret for two tours in Vietnam. But he felt his true purpose was to train Tiger, and he watched his son evolve into the dominant player of his time - the youngest player to win the career Grand Slam - and one of the most celebrated athletes in the world.

"I knew Tiger was special the day he was born," Woods said in a May 2000 interview with The Associated Press.

Rest Earl, until you hear at dawn,
the low, clear reveille of God.

Thank you for your service to this nation.

For Earl...you were always
more interested in raising great son...more than a great golfer.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Mr Woods
You (and your wife) truly did a great job in raising your son, Tiger, and instilling the right values in life. You would continued to be proud of the work he has done in giving back to the community and youngsters through his foundations. On this Fourth of July weekend he has honored the service men and women who fight to protect our wonderful country and to keep the American people safe. He does this with you in his memory. You may not be here in the physical world to acknowledge his good will but I'm confident your spirit is still very close to him. You must be smiling on Tiger's accomplishments, not only as one of the best golfers in the world and generous humanitarian, but also as a loving son, a devoted husband and a doting dad.

To Tiger and Family,

I first want to say that my family and I send our deepest sympathy to you and your family. As I watched you play to your third win at the Open this past weekend I saw how dedicated you were to the game your father taught you so well. He gave you all he could give with teaching the game of golf to you, but the most important thing he gave you was his Love as a father to his son. Love is in deed the greatest gift anyone can give to another. You and your Dad have given lots of Love by forming your foundation with the First Tee. You have giving many a kid the chance to learn the game of golf as your father taught you. Your actions speak louder then all the other things you could do for these kids.

I would like to also salute your father for serving in the green berets in Vietnam. I lost my cousin who was also a green beret in the special forces in Khe Sanh in 1968. I served during the Vietnam war, but was sent over to Germany to do my time for our country.

In closing I would like to say that we are very proud of you for honoring your father in everything you do in life.Keep him in your heart and most of all never forget the Love he gave you while he was on this earth. He is now with God still watching over you and your family.

God Bless,

Dennis

Dear Mr. Tiger Woods,

I will be thinking about you this Father's day. Whenever I see pictures of your father playing golf with you when you were little, I cry for your loss. I tell myself it really is such a wonderful thing your father saw you be so successful and watch you wear that success like such a gentleman. But it is still sad and I think that is how you must feel. Michelle

During this week, the week of Memorial Day and the 2006 Memorial Tournament, it makes me reflect on those we have lost and what they have meant to us in our lives. As I mourn those from my past, known and unknown alike, I would like to take this time to include the Woods family in my thoughts and prayers; My deepest condolences to your family. Your father, from what I have heard and read, was a great man and his greatness is reflected in those around him and will continue to be forever. God Bless.

This is one of many condolences. I warms my heart to see so many entries. Earl Woods was a great example of father, husband, hero. The first time my husband saw Earl on TV he was just sure that he saw Earl in Vietnam in 1969-1970. We always wondered if his memory was accurate. From reading about Earl, it's quite possibly so. Death is difficult and you will miss him forever. God give you faith to believe you will see him again.

I just called my father and mother to tell them that I love them after seeing that Tiger will not be playing in the Memorial this year. I was always very impressed with the caring relationship that existed between Earl and his son from what I could see on TV and in the papers. And when I saw that Tiger was not playing the Memorial (probably still suffering terribly), I just had to call my parents who have been very good to me like Earl was to Tiger. Earl seemed to live a wonderful life with a focus on service and appreciation for other people. He is in a better place, now, where he doesn't have to suffer.

When I think of what epitomizes a father I think of Earl Woods. No one can forget the sight of him hugging you at the Masters tournament, an African-American father showing love to his son, a sight not seen much in the media. As a fellow African-American father, a Vietnam veteran and a prostate cancer survivor [undoubtedly caused like your father due to exposure to Agent Orange], I had nothing but great admiration for him and what he accomplished in his life. May God comfort you and your family in this time of grief, but remember and relish the memories of the years you had with your father. God bless you.

William Traylor

May 9, 2006

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
