Frankie Laine Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 6, 2007.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Frankie Laine, the big-voiced singer whose string of hits made him one of the most popular entertainers of the 1950s, has died. He was 93.

Laine died of heart failure at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego on Tuesday, Jimmy Marino, Laine's producer of more than a dozen years, told The Associated Press.

"He was one of the greatest singers around," Marino said. "He was one of the last Italian crooners type."

With songs such as "That's My Desire," "Mule Train," "Jezebel," "I Believe" and "That Lucky Old Sun," Laine was a regular feature of the Top Ten in the years just before rock 'n' roll ushered in a new era of popular music.

Somewhat younger listeners may remember him best for singing the theme to the television show "Rawhide," which ran from 1959 to 1966, and the theme for the 1974 movie "Blazing Saddles."

He sold more than 100 million records and earned more than 20 gold records.

"He will be forever remembered for the beautiful music he brought into this world, his wit and sense of humor, along with the love he shared with so many," Laine's family said in a statement.

Laine said his musical influences included Bing Crosby, Al Jolson and jazz artists including Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holliday.

"When people nowadays say that Elvis was the first white guy to sound black, I have to shake my head; what can you do?" he said in a 1987 interview. "At the time of 'That's My Desire,' they were saying that I was the only white guy around who sounded black."

He occasionally recorded songs by country singers, such as "Hey Good Lookin"' and "Your Cheatin' Heart" by Hank Williams. In 2004 he released an album called "Nashville Connection."

Laine's variety show "Frankie Laine Time" ran for two summers, 1955 and 1956, on CBS, and he also appeared in films including "When You're Smiling," and "Sunny Side of the Street."

He had a top 25 hit on the Billboard charts in 1969 with "You Gave Me a Mountain," a song written by Marty Robbins.

Laine was born Frank LoVecchio on March 30, 1913, in Chicago, the son of a barber who emigrated from Sicily.

He struggled from his teens until well into his 30s - even having to earn a living as a marathon dancer - before hits began coming his way with "That's My Desire" in 1947. His breakthrough came when Hoagy Carmichael heard him sing in a Los Angeles nightclub and praised his work.

"People like to say, 'Oh, I wouldn't change a thing,"' he said in an interview for the book "Off the Record: An Oral History of Popular Music." "But if I had it to do over again, there is one thing I would change. I would make it happen maybe 10 years sooner.

"Ten years is a good stretch of scuffling. But I scuffled for 17 years before it happened, and 17 is a bit much."

In recent years, he remained active in touring and in charity fundraising. Punning on the title of one of his hits, he called his 1993 autobiography "That Lucky Old Son."

He made his last performance in 2005 on a PBS television special.

He was married to Nan Grey, a leading lady in Hollywood films of the 1930s who died in 1993.

Survivors include his second wife, Marcia; a brother; and two daughters.

I once heard Mr. Laine sing at a club in New Jersey when I took my wife to see and hear him sing. We both had a great time listening to him. He was such a good entertainer. As it turns out that night he appeared on stage with Miss Rosemary Clooney. What made the night so special was that he was the main act and why we decided to go. He was a big reason an uncle of mine took a shot at singing. May he RIP in the house of our Father Jesus and sings in the Lord's quire.

I am 92 years old & Frankie Laine records were what we listened too in my younger years. I loved Frank Sinatra too but my favorite "Frankie" was always Frankie Laine. I still listen to him & love the memories his music brings to me. Sweet Dreams, Frankie.

I've played his music since the 50's. His nuances in singing is unique, and it will never go out of style, I hope. He's singing on Lexis while I write. His emphasis on phrases and words is incomparable. I play it when guests are here, not many fans. Their choices can't compare, but new styles prevail with the young'ns. At 83, I'll be playing his music until I ...

Loved his music and voice. He once held a gate open for my wife and I at the San Jose Airport. Afterwards I said to her, "Do you know who just held the gate for us?" She said, "No", and I said, "Frankie Laine!"

I recently turned 80 and sung at my birthday Party, one of Frankie's hits "That my desire." My wife passed away on 12th Dec 2013 and I used to sing his songs to her. We were married on Oct 4th 1963. So for fifty years I sung to her, I miss her so much. I just had to sing this song, which is one of my all time Frankie's Favourites. Three weeks before Frank Died I received an Email from him in answer to a question I asked. I treasure it dearly.

Frankie Laine was my first celebrity crush. Just adored him in the early 50s. Later, early 60's got to chat with him in the Miramor bar in Columbus, Ohio: the thrill of my life - meeting him was #1 on my bucket list. At this time of my life (81) can't imagine that he was 20+ years my senior.

Frankie Laine was very important in my life. I had one of his albums and listened to it - even worked out to it - every day. When he played Beverly HIlls near Cincinnati many years ago, he allowed me to come backstage to meet him. I'd written a song that I thought would be great for him. He was open to receiving it, but somehow it never reached him. Years later, he appeared on a PBS special of "yesterday's" music. When he came out on stage, I cried. At that moment, he looked just like my father did before he died - and his voice was just as compelling as ever. It was memorable! Thank you, Frankie, for the music and the memories

Frankie was the first singer to capture my attention & soon became a fan at the age of 10/11. I remember listening to The Frankie Laine show on Radio Luxenberg 7pm each Sunday sponsered by Ovaltine. Although Elvis became my "idol" at 14. Frankie was never forgotten and even now my wife (5years younger) thinks I am pass my sell by date when I still play his songs. Just recently I downloaded some mp3 gospels by Frankie & being a Christian I just love them. So to me I know he will always have a special place in my heart, God willing I will get to meet him one day.

For Frankie...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I doubt I will ever hear a voice that can parallel his....and this is a loss that none can ever truly put the appropriate words to. There was nobody like him and we will never know this again. back in sixties U.K. there was no Frankie Laine FAN CLUB. Together with Muriel Moore (nee williams) Franks secretary I started fan club chapter 1 in 1964/65 in the U.K. After several years members Dr Mac Robinson/Bill Hayden and I met in an english pub and decided to rename the club the Frankie Laine International Appreciation Society. Frank loved it, was very generous to the club and all its members, even giving permission for us to release his early and unreleased material on cassette/albums and never asking for a cent in royalties.Frank was a wonderful big hearted guy, a wonderful singer, a personal friend who will be sadly missed. The appreciation soc flourishes today run by a small group with world wide membership. I can say from my heart that all of us will miss this big hearted guy. God bless you Frank. I find myself playing his songs "torchin'" and "midnight on a rainy monday" quite frequently when the mood allows. Those two records and "we'll be together again", "music, maestro, please" are in a league with "one for my baby". He was just as versatile with western themes and jazz arrangements also. None of us are perfect, but I know God has a special place for Frankie. He tried so much to be an inspiration to all.

I first heard Mr. Laine's distinct voice when my father introduced me by letting me watch Westerns with him on TV. Dad loved all "shot 'em ups", but I know he especially loved the ones when Frankie was involved. After some time, I came to enjoy listening to Frankie's voice, as well. Many nights I would fall asleep while listening to "Boot Hill" or "Gunfight At The OK Corral" as my record player spun.
I never knew Mr. Laine personally, but my impression of his voice was that it had great strength but, when the song called for it, a deep warmth. I believe Frankie's voice was a reflection of his character.
To Frankie and his family - God bless. And thank you for the memories........

My father enjoyed his singing. I took one of my dad's albums "Hell Bent For Leather" with me to college(SIU) back in the 60's. My friends would sit around singing all the songs on the album. We knew all the songs my memory and my favorite was "Wanted Man." After college I sang with a local band on a few occasions. I only sang one song, "Wanted Man." I made a guest appearance wearing cowboy boots and hat, gun and holster, etc. ready to sing my favorite song by Frankie. The audience would always wait in anticipation for the song to begin. I enjoyed singing the song and I believe those in attendance enjoyed hearing our rendition. I enjoyed his commercials on TV. There was no mistaking Frankie's voice when he began to sing. Remember the Manhandlers Theme Song? What a gifted singer. Your songs will live on forever. Rest in Peace my friend.

Thank you Frankie for the joy you have given me and the world.

I grew up loving Frankie Laine and his music. Ghost Riders in the Sky, Swamp Girl and Jezebel were my favorites. How lucky those of us who grew up in the 50's were to have Frankie's exciting music to sing and dance to!

Nobody, but nobody sang with the energy and soul that Frankie Laine possessed. It was always a great joy to listen to him. He will be imitated but never equaled. Rest in peace.

As a 10 year old in Glasgow, Scotland, my brother, who was 16 at the time, introduced the family to Frankie Laine and specifically Jezebel and Answer Me. These songs were the beginning of a love affair with rock n roll that has lasted to this day. I am now 65 and play his music on my ipod. He was a giant of a performer.

Frankie Laine. I fell in love with your voice the minute I heard you sing. That was a longtime ago. You will never be forgotten. Condoleances to the family.

The world has lost a legend. Frankie was one of my parents favorite singers and I have listened to him all of my life. Mom and Dad danced to all of his songs, but they claimed "To Each His Own" as their song. I still love to sing it. Dad and I sang "I Believe" together often and a friend sang it at his funeral last year. Another of my favorites was "The Little Boy and the Old Man". He was unique voice, and I am convinced, a unique and wonderful man who will be sorely missed. God Bless you, his family and friends, we will miss him too.

As a child of the 50's I loved, and still love, Frankie's music. I wish I had been able to see his last public appearance in 2005! For all the pleasure he has brought the world, I say thank you Frankie and rest in peace.
