Betty Hutton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 12, 2007.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Betty Hutton, the actress and singer who brought a brassy vitality to Hollywood musicals such as "Annie Get Your Gun," has died in Palm Springs, Calif., at age 86.

The death was confirmed Monday by a friend of Hutton who spoke only on the condition of anonymity, citing Hutton's wishes that her death be announced at a specified time by the executor of her estate, Carl Bruno. The friend refused to provide further details including the time and cause of death.

"I can neither confirm or deny" the report, Bruno told The Associated Press from Palm Springs. "I'll be happy to talk about it tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon."

Hutton was at the top of the heap when she walked out of her Paramount contract in 1952, reportedly in a dispute over her demand that her then-husband direct her films. She made only one movie after that but had a TV series for a year and worked occasionally on the stage and in nightclubs.

Unlike other actresses who have been called "blonde bombshells," Hutton had a screen personality that had more to do with energy and humor than sex.

Time magazine wrote in 1950: "Betty Hutton, who is not remarkably pretty, by movie standards, nor a remarkably good singer or dancer, has a vividly unique personality in a town that tends to reduce beauty and talent to mass-produced patterns. Watching her in action has some of the fascination of waiting for a wildly sputtering fuse to touch off an alarmingly large firecracker."

It said she had "a bellicose zeal and a tomboyish winsomeness that suggested a cross between one of the Furies and Little Orphan Annie."

Hutton could be brash behind the camera, too, telling The Associated Press in 1954: "When I'm working with jerks with no talent, I raise hell until I get what I want."

Several of her films were biopics: "Incendiary Blonde," about actress and nightclub queen Texas Guinan; "Perils of Pauline," about silent-screen serial heroine Pearl White; and "Somebody Loves Me," about singer Blossom Seeley.

"Annie Get Your Gun" (1950) was the Irving Berlin musical biography of Annie Oakley, with Hutton playing the part Ethel Merman had made famous on Broadway. Hutton got the movie role part when Judy Garland dropped out of the production.

Another notable film was "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek," the 1944 Preston Sturges satire that rattled the censors with the story of a young woman who gets pregnant after a spur-of-the-moment marriage and can't quite remember who the father is.

Sturges called Hutton "a full-fledged actress with every talent the noun implies. She plays in musicals because the public, which can do practically nothing well, is willing to concede its entertainers only one talent."

She returned the compliment, saying in a 1971 interview that "I am not a great singer and I am not a great dancer but I am a great actress, and nobody ever let me act except Preston Sturges. He believed in me."

She recalled years later how she got through one challenging scene - five minutes of rapid-fire dialogue - perfectly on the first try. "Preston was delighted, and he asked how I could do it. I said I memorized it like a song, learning the lines rhythmically."

In 1954, she announced to a Las Vegas nightclub audience: "This is my last show and I'm retiring from show business."

She backtracked the following year, saying, "I was wrong and I admit it." She said her mother told her, "God gave you a gift and it's not right to hide it from people."

But her only movie after 1952 was "Spring Reunion" in 1957.

In 1959-60, she starred in the TV series "The Betty Hutton Show" (also called "Goldie"), about a brash manicurist who suddenly inherits the estate of a wealthy customer and becomes guardian to his three children.

But her personal life was rocky at times, including four failed marriages, financial problems and difficulties between her and her three daughters. In a 1980 AP interview, Hutton said she had kicked a 20-year addiction to pills. "Uppers, downers, inners, outers, I took everything I could get my hands on," she said.

She credited a Rhode Island priest, the Rev. Peter Maguire, with befriending her and turning her life around. She converted to Roman Catholicism. In 1986, she earned a liberal arts degree from Salve Regina College, in Newport, R.I., commenting that she liked college because "the kids studying there accepted me as one of them."

"Practically all the stars are in trouble," she recalled telling the priests she met in Rhode Island. "You happen to see me talking honestly to you. It's a nightmare out there! It hurts what we do in our private lives."

When Maguire died in 1996, she said, "It was just so painful to me, I couldn't handle it. My kids all live in California, so I decided to come back here."

Coming out of her shell somewhat in recent years, she gave occasional performances and interviews, including an appearance in 2000 on the Turner Classic Movies cable channel.

But she told The Associated Press in a 2000 interview that she didn't like to see herself in her old movies.

"It isn't the movie I'm looking at. Professionally, my career was great," she said. "But never was the scene offstage great for me."

She was born Betty June Thornburg in Battle Creek, Mich., on Feb. 26, 1921, but she never knew her father. She began her career at age 5 singing with her sister, Marion, in their mother's speakeasy.

"When I mentioned that I wanted to be a star, my mother thought I was nuts," Hutton recalled. "I thought if I became a star and got us out of poverty, she would quit drinking. I didn't know (alcoholism) was a disease; nobody did. There was no A.A. then."

Her first real show business success was as a singer in Vincent Lopez's band. It was he who gave her the name Hutton. (Her sister eventually adopted the surname Hutton, too, and was a vocalist for Glenn Miller.)

Her mugging and wild gestures, tackling the microphone got her dubbed "America's No. 1 jitterbug." ("As a matter of fact, I couldn't jitterbug," she said.)

Then came a Broadway revue, "Two for the Show," and the stage version of "Panama Hattie" before getting her start in Hollywood. She became a protegee of Buddy De Sylva, famed songwriter then working for Paramount.

Her marriages to manufacturer Ted Briskin, dance director Charles O'Curran, recording company executive Alan Livingston and jazzman Pete Candoli ended in divorce.

I don't think there is anyone I could ever admire more than the late Betty Hutton. She scored a triumphant comeback after years of suffering with more courage than most people have. Amazing as a performer, and even more amazing a a person. R.I.P., Ms. Hutton. I'm sorry I never had the chance to know you personally.

For Betty's family.... I've become a huge admirer to classic movies. She's was dynamic and a firecracker, giving 100% of herself in anything I've seen her perform in. How could you not like her, with the bubbly personality that she showed in all of her films. I wished I had the opportunity to meet her, but seeing her on TCM being interviewed, wow, she still had the love life and full of spirit. I can only imagine knowing her personally.
Stars on the big screen can live forever, and I know where Betty is now, she's living up to what she was a bright star, who gave so much to the world. I'll miss her.

I was a kid who lived in Silverlake. A family friend worked at Paramount in the publicity dept. He (Floyd Simonton) took me to meet Betty as I adored her. She signed her picture for me and I had it for years. Perils of Pauline and Annie are my faves, but Stork Club and others are great too. Sorry her personal life was so sad, she deserved better.

Watching her sister sing in Orchestra Wives brings back vivid memories of Betty's character. It obviously was a family trait. Marion's song delivery is nearly identical, facial expressions and all. Trying to identify all those people today while watching it, I immediately knew who she was. Marion and Betty, we will always love you. RIP

For Betty...

They just don't make them
like you anymore.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Genuine, honest, gifted & forever in our hearts! I just saw the 2000 TV interview of Miss Betty and wanted to write her and tell her how she has touched my life since I was little, so sad I see I was too late. I decided to write here. Today I played "You can't get a man with a gun!" for my little granddaughter and we sang it along with Betty. She will be with us forever, throughout the generations. Her love of life, her talent, her love of people and her love of the Lord has blessed us all. Thank you Betty for sharing it all with us. And thank you God for sharing Betty with us.

Betty Hutton was my heroine when I was growing up & "Annie Get Your Gun" was my favourite movie. I was delighted to get a video copy of it some years ago & have watched it umpteen times since. My 4 grandchildren also now love the show. I know all Betty's songs off by heart & "Doing What Comes Naturally" was my signature tune. I have performed it for family, friends & in concerts. (Once I even sang it on a crowded bus full of strangers & the reaction was printed in "The Australian Women's Weekly" magazine in 1981). Betty has given me so much joy over the years watching her on the big & small screens. I loved her vitality & she was such a natural actress. And the world will be a lesser place without her. I am a Catholic priest, ordained in 1978. In 1964 I met Betty in my hometown of Mishawaka, Indiana. I got her autograph and she kissed me! She was the first famous person I met..but shortly afterwards she faded from the limelight. In 1971 Life magazine feature an article about famous people of the past. As I read about her life, she spoke of being on the brink of suicide but then mentioned the experience she had at an Assembly of God Church, how their love of God and their faith saved her life. I was in my junior year attending our seminary college and reading her reflections helped me realize how communicating God's love can actually save a life. I was on retreat at the time and what she said in that article moved my heart and gave me the added enthusiasm I needed to continue to discern my vocation.

I wrote her, telling her all this, and she responded with a nine page letter, which I still have. I would love to share this story(and there's a lot more to say) with any of her children that might want to listen. I know that Betty was far from perfect, but perhaps hearing about this might give them some peace.

The last time I spoke to Betty via phone was around 2000...she was going to be interviewed on TV and was a bit nervous...she told me she lost Fr. Maguire's rosary and asked if I could send her one of mine. I did. If you watch the interview, you will see that she is holding it.

And now I pray that God, who is all merciful and forgiving, will be holding her in the palm of His hand.

When I seen The Greatest Show on Earth in 1952, I was so taken by Betty Hutton's role that wrote to her, I was only 12 but I adored her. She sent me a 8x10 B&W photo of herself and signed it. I cherished that picture and I have seen all of her pictures over the years. I also still have a clipping from our local newspaper that said 12 year old Marylyn Anderson of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, gets thrill of a lifetime when she received a autograph picture from actress Betty Hutton. I still watch The Greatest Show on Earth every time it comes on Turner Classic movies.

I have dearly missed you my friend and now may you rest in peace and may God hold your girls tight during this time of sorrow. We all make mistakes in life, I believe that Ms. Hutton has more than made up for those mistakes. Her life has made millions of people happy when they were down. What could be more special? I cut my teeth on the Victrola while listening to her sing "His Rocking Horse Ran Away" and "It Had to Be You" when I was a baby. From the time I first saw her, I was crazy about her and had to see each new film when it came out. Years later, she came to Louisville and starred in "Mary Mary" in a theatre in the round tent show at the St. Matthews Mall. After the show I met her at the Patio Lounge there at the same mall. She was very nice to me and I sat at her table with her costar Sally. I will never forget it or her. She was so much fun. When "Annie Get Your Gun" came out on video, I was thrilled to no end. For years, there was some controversy about its release. I treasure it as her greatest performance. May she rest in peace and give the angels in heaven as much pleasure and fun as she did people on this earth.

I always loved Betty Hutton even though I am a generation removed from the 1940s & 50s movie-going public. Yes, she was fabulously beautiful, and yet that rare beauty never diminished her 'girl-next-door' appeal. Those two qualities don't often exist in one person, and I couldn't explain to myself why those qualities co-existed in this wonderful lady. I think I learned the answer to that question when I saw Turner Classic Movies 'Private Screenings' interview with her, taped in 2002. She explained that she truly loved people and that she was so grateful to those fans who came to see her films and stage-shows. She was near tears several times as she expressed her gratitude and love to her many fans, the great majority of which, she would never have the opportunity to thank in person.

I remember, after watching the TCM interview, drafting a letter to her expressing what a joy it was to see her again and to thank her for the love for her audience which she always displayed through her work. I also wanted to tell her that I was most thrilled to hear her unashamed proclamation of her faith in Jesus Christ. I never mailed that letter for lack of a forwarding address. I now look forward to a moment in eternity when I can thank Betty Hutton in person.

God Bless Betty Hutton and those who were close to her.

Betty Hutton was one of my all-time favorite performers. Just the thought of her puts a smile on my face. What a talent! She was so lively and charismatic and just so much fun. And such a wonderful singer. My favorite musical performance of her's are "Doing It For Defense" and "My Rocking Horse Ran Away."

I was privileged enough to see Ms. Hutton on Broadway when she took over in Annie -- one of the most thrilling theatre experiences of my life!

My sympathies to the family. I hope you find strength in knowing that Ms. Hutton brought so much joy to so many people and, through her films and recordings, will continue to do so forever.

It was my wonderful experience to have Father Maguire and Betty Hutton to my house for dinner one evening in the late '70's or early '80's. My father who was a very good friend of Father Maguire invited them. She was so much fun. I was very happy to meet her. May God rest her soul.

What a personality Ms. Hutton had and what an actress. Her part in Greatest Show on Earth is what makes this movie so great. She will be missed.

It must have been about 25 years ago when I had the surprise of my life. I was an assistant manager at Cumberland Farms in Middletown, almost ready to close for the night, and in walked Betty Hutton! I could not believe it, but there she was! She was a delightful person to chat with, and chat she did! I have not forgotten that chance meeting with her many years ago. She was very nice lady.

My awareness of Betty Hutton's career came from my father. He worked as a paper boy outside Steel Pier on the boardwalk in Atlantic City in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and collected the autographs of the celebrities who played there who bought papers from him. The autograph book I have has a page signed by Betty Hutton, Sonny Schuylor, and Penny Parker, labelled by my father as "singers with Vincent Lopez".
