Craig Thomas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 4, 2007.
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas, a three-term conservative Republican who stayed clear of the Washington limelight and political catfights, died Monday. He was 74.

The senator's family issued a statement saying he died Monday evening at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. He had been receiving chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia.

Just before the 2006 election, Thomas was hospitalized with pneumonia and had to cancel his last campaign stops. He nonetheless won with 70 percent of the vote, monitoring the election from his hospital bed.

Two days after the election, Thomas announced that he had just been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, will appoint a successor from one of three finalists chosen by the state Republican party.

''Wyoming had no greater advocate, taxpayers had no greater watchdog, and rural America had no greater defender than Craig Thomas,'' Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday night. ''The Senate is a lesser place without Craig here, but the state of Wyoming and our nation are much better places because he was here.''

Thomas was a low-key lawmaker who reliably represented the interests of his conservative state, often becoming involved in public lands issues. He worked in behind-the-scenes posts to oversee national parks, including Yellowstone in Wyoming.

He was also an advocate for domestic energy and minerals production. He worked to protect Wyoming's mining industry from foreign competition and backed efforts to get a federally funded coal gasification plant built in the state.

After his first round of chemotherapy, Thomas returned to the Senate in December, a month earlier than expected. A few months later, he said he felt better than he had in a long time. But he returned to the hospital for a second round of chemotherapy in May.

''I'm resolved to do all I can to keep the leukemia in check,'' he said then. ''I've been feeling very good over the last several months _ even returning to my regular morning run. But I've always known that further treatments are common and could periodically be part of this thing.''

Thomas entered Congress in a special election in 1989 to replace Dick Cheney when the future vice president was named defense secretary by the first President Bush. Thomas won that race with 52 percent of the vote.

In 1994, Thomas won his first Senate race by beating former Gov. Mike Sullivan 59 percent to 39 percent. Thomas was re-elected by a wide margin in 2000, winning 74 percent of the vote against Democrat Mel Logan and Libertarian Margaret Dawson.

Thomas had previously served five years in the Wyoming Legislature.

He was born in Cody, Wyo., and was raised on a ranch. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in agriculture, then served four years in the U.S. Marines.

He also was vice president of the Wyoming Farm Bureau and general manager of the Wyoming Rural Electric Association.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, and four children.

During these hard times it is very hard to lose a good man who led by example and expounded conservative American values. When the Lord calls it is our next duty to go with him. It is hard for us to understand sometimes but we must go on. On January 22, 2007 we lost our son-in-law in Iraq. Spec. Nicholas Brown was in 2/7 Cav of 1st Cavalry Division. He left behind a young wife and a newborn son. He felt he was serving his country and no one else could do what he had to. Mr. Thomas was in this same category, he did what others could or would not do. We thank you for your service to your country. Please accept our prayers and sympathies during these difficult times. Thank you,

We, the people of Wyoming, have lost an honest, kind, gentle man that represented us, the people of Wyoming, to the fullest. Our family was very proud to vote for Craig Thomas.
We will miss Craig Thomas when we do the Relay for Life walk in August. Craig and Susan have been there walking when my family was walking the relay. He alway had a word and a smile for everyone.
My deepest simpathy to the Thomas Family in this time of sorrow.

My deepest sympathies to the Thomas family. I live in PA and I happened to be reading my late husband's guest book messages. I didn't realize that I was forwarded to this site but I probably was brought here for a reason. I hope I am not bothering you with my message. I know what a battle Senator Thomas had to endure. I lost my husband to cancer 10 months ago. He fought for four years, not missing a day of work, leaving the chemo chair to go to the office. His strength and bravery were amazing. He was in hopsice care for three weeks and quietly died in my arms, in our bedroom, last Aug. 2nd. He told me from the start; "this is a disease, it will kill me, but I will not give up without a heck of a fight.", and he didn't. He fought until his last breath. Losing my husband is like not really being completely alive myself, but I continue to attempt to be strong for my children as that is what he wanted. Please know I will pray for you, as I'm sure that Senator Thomas is in heaven with God and my husband Larry. God bless you.

Mrs. Lawrence J. Kelly
