Roy Scheider Obituary
Scheider died Sunday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock, hospital spokesman David Robinson said. The hospital did not release his cause of death.
However, hospital spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said Scheider had been treated for multiple myeloma at the hospital's Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy for the past two years.
Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss starred in the 1975 movie, ''Jaws,'' which was widely hailed as the film that launched the era of the Hollywood blockbuster. It was the first film to earn $100 million at the box office.
In 2005, one of Scheider's most famous lines in the movie _ ''You're gonna need a bigger boat'' _ was voted No. 35 on the American Film Institute's list of best quotes from U.S. movies.
That year, some 30 years after ''Jaws'' premiered, hundreds of movie buffs flocked to Martha's Vineyard, off the southeastern coast of Massachusetts, to celebrate the great white shark that terrified millions of moviegoers.
The island's JawsFest '05 also brought back some of the cast and crew, including screenwriter Carl Gottlieb and Peter Benchley, who wrote the novel that inspired Steven Spielberg's enduring classic.
Spielberg, Scheider, who played a police chief, and Dreyfuss, who played an oceanographer, were absent from Jawsfest '05. Co-star Robert Shaw, who played Quint, died in 1978.
Scheider also participated in rallies protesting U.S. military action in Iraq, including a massive New York demonstration in March 2003 that police said drew 125,000 chanting activists.

Outstanding actor and wonderful human being. I just watched "French Connection" again and wow is he great! Roy has such an indelible presence. He's a man's man. Every film he's in he shines!... Considering that the volume of thoughts and prayers can be overwhelming, we waited until now to send you this note. We were fortunate enough to do business with Roy a few years ago. We sold him the Convertible and delivered it to your home in time for Christmas. He sent us an autographed picture which we display proudly on our dealership's "wall of fame". Many of our friends and customers have enjoyed seeing it and talking about Roy and how he entertained them. We just wanted to let you know that we will use that picture as a tribute to his memory.

I, like many of my peers, saw Jaws in 76, and was terrified and mesmerized at the time. I was so captured by Mr. Scheider's performance it led to me over the years searching out his other roles, and what a wonderful treat I received. The first time my nose was broken I was ecstatic because I now looked like Roy Scheider! I may have only known him on the screen, but what an incredible part of my life he became. God Bless You All

I really enjoyed Jaws. But I will always remember him for his part in the "Marathon Man." The casting in that film was great and Roy help make it the great film that it still is today. His role was pivotal to setting up the rest of the story. And, gave an excellent portrayal. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family, friends and all who had the pleasure of knowing him personally.

To the Family and Loved ones of Mr. Scheider , Roy Scheider was one of my favorite actors , As a teen I read and re-read Peter Benchley's "JAWS". I was also in Cape Cod during the filming for my brother's friend's wedding . I still have pictures of the fake shark being hauled out to sea . I became a theatre major and was in awe of Mr. Scheider's portrayal of Bob Fosse . RIP and I hope that you and my Father (who was also a big fan ) will have that talk .Bless you all .

When I heard of Roy's death, my memeory was the FINAL MOMENTS of

I was so sad to hear of Roy Scheider's passing. Since I was a little kid I always loved the Jaws movies. So much so, that when I had a baby 3 yrs. ago, I named him Brody, after Chief Brody from the movie. It was always a secret wish of mine to someday be able to meet Mr. Scheider and tell him that his most famous character has a new namesake. I wonder what he would've thought about that. He will be missed greatly. I'm going to cry now.
