William F. Buckley

William Buckley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 27, 2008.
NEW YORK (AP) - William F. Buckley Jr., the erudite Ivy Leaguer and conservative herald who showered huge and scornful words on liberalism as he observed, abetted and cheered on the right's post-World War II rise from the fringes to the White House, died Wednesday. He was 82.

His assistant Linda Bridges said Buckley was found dead by his cook at his home in Stamford, Conn. The cause of death was unknown, but he had been ill with emphysema, she said.

Editor, columnist, novelist, debater, TV talk show star of "Firing Line," harpsichordist, trans-oceanic sailor and even a good-natured loser in a New York mayor's race, Buckley worked at a daunting pace, taking as little as 20 minutes to write a column for his magazine, the National Review.

Yet on the platform he was all handsome, reptilian languor, flexing his imposing vocabulary ever so slowly, accenting each point with an arched brow or rolling tongue and savoring an opponent's discomfort with wide-eyed glee.

"I am, I fully grant, a phenomenon, but not because of any speed in composition," he wrote in The New York Times Book Review in 1986. "I asked myself the other day, 'Who else, on so many issues, has been so right so much of the time?' I couldn't think of anyone."

Buckley had for years been withdrawing from public life, starting in 1990 when he stepped down as top editor of the National Review. In December 1999, he closed down "Firing Line" after a 23-year run, when guests ranged from Richard Nixon to Allen Ginsberg. "You've got to end sometime and I'd just as soon not die onstage," he told the audience.

"For people of my generation, Bill Buckley was pretty much the first intelligent, witty, well-educated conservative one saw on television," fellow conservative William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard, said at the time the show ended. "He legitimized conservatism as an intellectual movement and therefore as a political movement."

Fifty years earlier, few could have imagined such a triumph. Conservatives had been marginalized by a generation of discredited stands - from opposing Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal to the isolationism which preceded the U.S. entry into World War II. Liberals so dominated intellectual thought that the critic Lionel Trilling claimed there were "no conservative or reactionary ideas in general circulation."

Buckley founded the biweekly magazine National Review in 1955, declaring that he proposed to stand "athwart history, yelling 'Stop' at a time when no one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those who urge it." Not only did he help revive conservative ideology, especially unbending anti-Communism and free market economics, his persona was a dynamic break from such dour right-wing predecessors as Sen. Robert Taft.

Although it perpetually lost money, the National Review built its circulation from 16,000 in 1957 to 125,000 in 1964, the year conservative Sen. Barry Goldwater was the Republican presidential candidate. The magazine claimed a circulation of 155,000 when Buckley relinquished control in 2004, citing concerns about his mortality, and over the years the National Review attracted numerous young writers, some who remained conservative (George Will, David Brooks), and some who didn't (Joan Didion, Garry Wills).

"I was very fond of him," Didion said Wednesday. "Everyone was, even if they didn't agree with him."

Born Nov. 24, 1925, in New York City, William Frank Buckley Jr. was the sixth of 10 children of a a multimillionaire with oil holdings in seven countries. The son spent his early childhood in France and England, in exclusive Roman Catholic schools.

His prominent family also included his brother James, who became a one-term senator from New York in the 1970s; his socialite wife, Pat, who died in April 2007; and their son, Christopher, a noted author and satirist ("Thank You for Smoking").

William F. Buckley was truly an amazing person with so much talent the loss is clearly ours. Prayers fill our hearts and burst forth from our mouths to God asking him to let us remember clearly the love we have for this wonderful person gone from our lives never forgetting the joy we shared experiencing a great and authentic talent. (Hebrews 6:10).

A gracious and respectable person whose work has done so much to bring so much joy to many of us in these troubled times hard to deal with (2 Tim 3;1). Perhaps more will continue to have positive experiences from a wonderful work that has an impactful contribution to life and its anxieties.

For William...

A class guy.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I remember that as a little girl, decades ago, I was captivated by the voice and eloquence of William F. Buckley. I was drawn to the television set when he was on, and while not understanding what he was saying, I was compelled to stay and listen to this interesting and unique man. After reading thru entries in this guestbook, it is clear that he has had a profound affect on so many of us. Whatever the topic, he made it interesting and of course clearer for those of us not gifted with his rational insight.

I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that my husband was born on WFB's birthday. Guess I know a good thing when I see it.

With your passing and others of your era, we suffer a monumental loss. May God bless us all and heal the hearts of your loved ones.

Mr. William F. Buckley, Jr., was the most powerful positive influence in my life. The oldest of seven children in an Irish Catholic family, I became the only registered Republican in that family and later served in the Reagan Administration, all inspired by Mr. Buckley. We met in person only once, he and I, when I was a senior at the Cornell law school. I wept in sadness that night as I reflected upon how rudely he had been treated by a few students in his audience. This morning, reading the remembrance penned by Peggy Noonan, I wept again.

"Firing Line" was my favorite show when I was a kid: followed by "Dark Shadows" and any "Bonanza" that featured Pernell Roberts. His use of language made my heart leap. No matter how far away from him I might be ideologically, I have remained very fond of him. Seeing him on TV automatically makes me smile, and I can't possibly change channels until he is done, much to my husband's amusement. I use the present tense because his image remains in our media generally and, more to the point, at will on the computer.

I love William F. Buckley!

The name William F. Buckley has always stirred my imagination.  I have always noticed how people raise their eyebrows when his name is mentioned in a discussion, not unlike the manner in which he raised his own.  I would see him worshipping at St. Mary's Church in Stamford and chatted with him at Trader Joe's in Darien.  His notoriety did not obscure his understanding and need of genuine warm communication. Always thirsty, he would look you in the eye eager to engage, if not to enlighten but to be enlightened. How at ease he seemed when interviewed or in a debate.  He drew from everyday experience as well as idealogical discourse and introspection. He was the loyal confidant of an extraordinarily diverse circle of friends as well as adversaries. I have always felt that this titan and champion of freedom was at peace with himself, a peace that was drawn from his conviction that a full life, one which brings a gleam to the eye of his Creator, involves hard work toward a worthy goal, respect for your fellow man though he may be your ideological adversary, and a robust appreciation of leisure and recreation.  He did not conquer the Atlantic Ocean; he played with it, and it was good to him. There is no doubt that Bill Buckley will forever reap from the seeds he sowed.  He has had an impact on so many that even God will surely raise His eyebrow every time they meet. My warm wishes to all of you now as you remember and celebrate Bill's life.

Farewell Blackford Oakes! Your commentaries and writings were an inspiration and led me to read more in my younger days than anyone would have believed. I still miss Firing Line and National Review hasn't been the same. Still, you opened my world to political thought, patience with those who oppose my views, and an appreciation for the diversity of thought. Not to mention watching more PBS and less of the major networks. How would say? "Brilliant"! Take care and God bless Bill Buckley and his family.

I met WFB, Jr. on two occasions, once in 1965 at a taping of his TV show "Firing Line", and again in 1997 when he gave a reading of excerpts from his book "Nearer, My God: An Autobiography of Faith." On both occasions, I found him to be gracious, genial, witty, and impressive beyond words. He made me proud to call myself a conservative. He served his country, his fellow citizens, and his God so wonderfully. I wish him the eternal rest he so richly deserves.

Dear
Family of William Buckley,
I want to express my sincere sympathy for the loss of your loved one.
You can be assured that there is hope for all who suffer during these
times of grief. The Bible holds the promise of a time when there will
be no more pain, from any source; this can be found at Revelations
21:3, 4. What a wonderful hope for us all. I hope this provides a
measure of comfort for your family. Please take care of yourselves and
keep the good memories of your loved one close. Sincerely

Condolences to Mr. Buckley's loved ones, friends, and colleagues. I had the pleasure of being in the audience at St. John's University (NY) when he came for a speaking engagement. That year being one of upheaval and unrest -- 1968 -- I still can see and hear him, so calm and resolute. A true intellect. He shall be missed. May the angels pull out their dictionaries; they'll need them to keep up with Bill. May he rest in peace.

Although our political biases were diametrically opposed, one of my favorite people was Bill Buckley. When he was a guest at a party, and one's liberal friends invariably collared him to tell him off, he was always the gentleman. He never used the ammunition he would use on Firing Line. Instead he patiently explained his views in a few succinct words, often leaving us non-plussed. In my thinking he has earned a place in heaven.

I am a Democrat who always has had the greatest respect for Mr. Buckley's highly intelligent commentaries. I recall an excellent debate with Ron Dugger at the University of Texas in the early 1960s, a meeting of two extremely bright persons of opposite political persuasion who could air their differences with great respect for each other. Bless you, Bill Buckley. You are a far cry from some of the political commentators, both liberal and conservative, we read and hear today.

I will say that I am a moderate liberal, much more moderate in my middle age than I was 20 years ago. But even in my days of flaming liberalism, I liked and appreciated William F. Buckley. The guy was intelligent and interesting, witty and urbane. Yes, he was conservative, but he expressed ideas with flair and was open to conversation. He was the anti-Limbaugh, to tell you the truth. He argued ideas, but didn't stoop to personal attacks. He fervently believed in his ideas and that belief was a beautiful thing to behold. I'd wish for him eternal rest but I reckon he'll immediately take it upon himself to publish the "Heavenly Review" -- subtitled Eternal Conservatism. We debated at Vanderbilt University, October 09, 1986. He was every bit the gigantic personna I expected him to be. He was returning to the south, but not the south of his Texas father and Louisianna mother. He had embrassed segregation as a younger man but had grown to repudiate it. His appearance on stage with me, thus recognizing me as an intellectual peer, was testimony to this and I though we did not share world views, I saluted him then and do now as a great American.

You were the hero and guide to so many of us who felt we had no other voice loud enough to be heard. You expressed conservative views with calm eloquence.

Mr.Buckley, I will miss you. Though I'm not a conservative, you earned my respect and admiration early on as an erudite champion of genteel debate. You presented a rare example of decorum and integrity where there was and still is so little.

You will be missed. We had to keep a dictionary by our side when we listened to you. You taught us how to be cool. You will remain our hero forever. Love and condolences to your family. What a great American.

All Americans are better informed about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness becaue of the wonderful news broadcast by this magnificant man. We will all miss him, but will never forget how he implored this Country to follow the constitution and to stay within the bounds set forth by its inspired founders. May his principles live on and unite us forever.
