I remember as a teenager going to Ralph's hunting shack during deer season east of Kerrick, MN with Harry Osterkamp (also born in Bruno). The shack was always unlocked & Harry signed the guest book that was always left out & I marveled at the old snowmobiles that were out back & the shack itself. Years later, during deer season again, I was at Duquette bar having lunch & Ralph bought a beer for me. We were the only two customers at the time. I didn't know who he was until Lola the owner mentioned it to me.
I heard many times of the sales reps from Ski-Doo that would come to Kerrick and have Ralph test their machines. They would ride from Kerrick out to Ralph's hunting shack. I suspect a little Scotch was consumed.
Thanks again Ralph for the beer!

To the Plaisted Family: My name is Justina Plaisted Wagner. My grandfather was Robert Plaisted,(b. 1927) also born and raised in Bruno Minnesota. He was a cousin of Ralphs. I grew up listening to his stories about Ralph's polar adventure. I came across your guest book as I was searching for information to pass on to my children. What a wonderful legacy Ralph left.

To The Ralph Plaisted Family
It was an honour to have spent time with Ralph , if only for a short time. I met him back in the summer of 1982 while working for a mineral exploration company (Getty Minerals) near Russel Lake. He convinced me to come back the following summer and guide for him. It was one of the very best summers I ever spent. I will always remember him telling me of his experiences. I could listen to him for hours. He was truly a great man and I will always regret not spending more time with him. I think about him often. Truly sorry for your loss.

To the family of Ralph Plaisted,
I hope that one day Mr. Ralph Plaisted will get the recognition he deserves for the 1968 expedition to the North Pole. He had so much to be happy for and proud of.
I don't know where in the family tree we may be connected but I am a Plaisted by birth. The part of the Plaisted family I am connected to is from Maine. Roger Plaisted is one of the promenent members of this part of the family. My thoughts are with you and your family.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of this great man. I was very proud to be part of his expedition in 1968 when I designed and hand made the gasoline engine powered generators used by him to provide electricity for his trip and radio communications with the supply flights to him on the way to the North Pole. I still have several of the photos that he sent to me from the trip there.

I just came across this and it moved me to tears. I am an EMT and was with Ralph on his last trip home from Regina, Saskatchewan. He was a great man who filled my flight with 2 hours of kind words and stories of his yournger years.
I was deeply saddened to hear of his death. He made a large impact on me those few hours we were together. I was getting married shortly after I was with him and he wished me luck with my marriage.
Ralph will always be remembered by me as he was my last ever patient as an EMT on the streets. I was injured on the job the same night that I met him.
To Ralphs family, you are all wonderful people. I met some of you breifly when we arrived in St. Paul the evening we flew back to Minnesota. I will never forget all of you and I will never forget Ralph!
My thoughts are with your family and I do think of Ralph often!
I would love to know more about Ralph and he did mention to me that he had some books that he had written. If you could get me the names I would love to get them and read all about his journeys.

To the Plaisted Family,
The world is less with the passing of Mr. Plaisted. He touched many lives and was the envy of all who shared his love of adventure. The world can be a small place. I first heard of the Plaistid Polar Expedition while living in South Carolina in the early 70's from Dr. Weston Cook a member of the team with whom I had become friends. In the early 90's some of my friends asked me to go on a fly in fishing trip to Russell Lake. What a surprise to meet Mr. and Mrs. Plaisted and to relate to Ralph my friendship with Wes Cook. After the days fishing, with Ralph enjoying a little of my scotch, I got to hear first hand again about the polar expedition and the hardships encountered.
Your Mom and Dad were good people and I am better person for my brief encounter with them.
RIP

Hi to Everyone in Ralph's family,
I hope you will try to make it out to the fish shack with us and you have to be at our fish fry. We will always have a picture of Ralph in the shack and our love for him in our hearts. I miss him so much, but am so fortunate to have him for the time I did.
Not a time goes by that I get in my truck and think "Remember, for every one mile of road there's two miles of ditch!"
Love you guys!

Plaisted Family: I met the Plaisted family in 1979. I graduated high school on a Friday and left Saturday for Russel Lake Sask. I spent the summer working for Ralph(if fishing is work). The man enjoyed family, friends, joking and life one ounce more than his scotch. Thanks for the time Ralph!

Leslie, John and family... I am so sorry that Ralph has passed. Have had several great fishing trips to Plaisteds camp. 2008 is one that has not been very happy. June 7th Ralph and Sally are flying in with us for opening week. 4 hours into our first day we were loading Ralph back into the twin otter, after having fallen in the kitchen fixing our supper. 5 days later, camp was surrounded by fire, and we were also leaving camp. And now Ralph is gone, and maybe camp too. As for myself I will raise a glass and say so long to one unique man. I think the doctor ordered a double scotch everyday at 5...

We were sorry to hear of Ralph's death, it is sad to have lost a loved one, we were at the plaisted camp a few years ago we had taken our mom ( Norma Plaisted Wood) there she enjoyed going by 4 wheelers to the old homestead she called it. We had so much fun. Thank you Ralph for allowing us to visit the cabin in Namadji State Forest in Bruno, MN..
Love to you all, God Bless

Years ago, my father worked for Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and he had the privilege of meeting your father when Collins supplied the radio equipment that would withstand the brutal artic temperatures your father would have to endure. Dad always admired your father and found him a most interesting and knowledgable and just an all-around gracious man.
My condolences to your family. I know you will miss him.

One of my earliest memories of my entire life is that of Ralph Plaisted! I remember so vividly running next door to his house, where we were given as much Pepsi and popcorn that my brother and I could consume! As a kid, I was so proud to personally know the famous Ralph Plaisted of White Bear Lake! As an adult, I was honored to have cared for him when he was ill - He always still had a wink for me! He was a cherished friend of my parents and family. His warm smile, hearty laugh and bear hugs will forever remain in my memory and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing Ralph. With Sympathy and Love to his family and friends, Liz Schifsky-Alldritt

Dear Plaisted Family,
Just want to send our sympathy and relate to you the memories that bring to mind the stories of our Dad (Oliver Bergstrom) and fishing at the Plaisted Camp at Russell Lake.
Many pictures we have to show what a wonderful time they had!
We hail from the Finley, ND area, where the Glen Plaisted Family lived and being my dad was neighbors to Glen & Bev, they became very longtime close friends.
Dad made many trips to Russell Lake, bringing friends, sons and grandchildren with to experience the wonders of the outdoors in the wilderness.
My son and wife, Bruce & Teresa Mitzel, live now in California and are friends with Mike & Diane in Idaho. What a small world!
Ralph's love of the outdoors and his adventure is a great family heritage & legacy to leave to each of you. Cherish His Memory.
Sincerely
Marcia Mitzel

Leslie and family,
So sorry to hear about your Dad. It has been many years since I've seen him, but I have fond and happy memories from when we were kids. His friendship with my Dad fostered a long lasting affection for Ely, MN for me and my family. I hope the sad moments of these few days are outweighed by many happy memories.

I was very sorry to hear about the death of Ralph Plaisted. I did not have the opportunity to meet him but my late husband spoke very highly of him. My husband, Dr. Weston Carrier Cook, was on the expedition to the Pole. He was the physician and ham radio operator. I have many, many pictures taken by Weston of the expedition and a lot of the
dangers they encounted.
My regrets to the family and the world owes these men on this expedition recognition for being the first ever to be confirmed to be at 90 degree North.

Minnesota has lost a true legend in Mr. Plaisted. The world still needs to officially give his 1968 expedition the credit so deservedly earned.
Condolences to all his family and close friends, as they celebrate a life richly lived. He traveled to the top of this world's beautiful earth, and now shares the glow of heaven with our maker Lord Jesus Christ.
Grew up riding the old Ski-Doo's here in Duluth, Minnesota.
Mr. Plaisted was our hero!

Met Ralph many year ago when he spoke about his adventures here in Forest City, Iowa. I really enjoyed talking with him and made contact with him for a few after. I always admired him and his perserverance. I think he was one of a kind. He was a true explorer. I have his poster and explorer decals that they had on their sled framed and hanging in my den. He was a great person.

Dear Jacquie and families,
It has been many years since we were in school together. I was a year younger and you probably don't even remember me, but we all fondly remember your famous Dad. He must be exploring the heavens with an excited heart and his snowmobile all reved up. My folks were in the snowmobile club with yours. What great times they had. I am so sorry for your loss, but your dad sure touched many lives and his legend will live on. May the Lord's love and promise of paradise bring you peace and comfort during this difficlut time.

To The Family of Ralph Plaisted,
I first met your Mom and Dad at Country Club Market in Roseville. I worked as a Cashier and both frequently came in and bought supplies for a upcoming expedition. I loved listening to all the stories and the people that he was associated with. It had been years since I have seen or heard from them. Last year I was at our cabin on South Center Lake and I noticed a gentlemen sitting on the neighbor's dock fishing. I asked if it was Ralph and sure enough. I sat with him on numerous occasions and listened to his stories and was sad to hear your Mom passed away. He truly was one of a kind and I will keep him and all of you in my prayers.
I am on my way to the cabin, expecting the grandchildren to arrive and go fishing.

To the Plaisted Family,
I had taken care of Ralph in the hospital a few times this past year as he was recovering from his broken hip and complications thereafter. He was always such a pleasant and gracious patient and it was a pleasure to know and serve him. His fishing trip stories always captured my attention. I express my sincere sympathy for his loss.

Dear Ralph's family
The geese are flying and looking for that wonderful man who was here every year to save our crops from goose damage. Not only the geese but the rest of the community are missing out on all the fun and wisdom that your dear dad brought to us all each year. We are all saddened to hear that we will not have Ralph in our midst in person but his spirit is with us and his name will be spoken often. Your dad brought life and love to a great community and we will all miss the fun. Hope all your wonderful memories help you carry on.
Thinking of you all.

To the Plaisted Family,
I am sorry to hear of your loss. My mother told me at a young age of my relation to your family, but she was unclear as to where in the family tree I would be. My maiden name is Plaisted and most living family members are from the New York to Ohio area.
I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. My most sincerely condolences go out to all of you during this time.

To Plaisted family and friends:
Ralph will be deeply missed by all. It will be a quiet fall in Loyd for the first time in a half a century. I have known Ralph for over half of my young existence and no truer friend could be had. The Reed family adopted Ralph and Riki many years ago. Good tomatoes and love of life and the outdoors started that. My parents Bruce and Carol enjoyed entertaining with the Plaisteds and pretty soon I figured out that 5:00 pm was a magical time for Ralph. All who know him know what 5:00 means. I worked at Carlisles Store next to Ralphs home and as a young teen I was enamored by the crusty old man in the funny hat and leather jacket who bought his minnows there. I was his favorite because I would hand pick his premium crappie minnows..." smaller the better kid!"
It was .89 a scoop, but Ralph always tipped me a couple of dollars. Years later Ralph,my Father and I would go on our ice fishing excursions and tell good stories....Ralph was always a welcome sight. We would always do something...."even if it's wrong!"
He was one of my chaufers during my battle with cancer...driving me to some of my treatments. Always was giving me a boost of confidence.Even though his driving took care of more cancer cells than chemotherapy.
As years went by my family, Aunts,Uncles friends of my father befriended Ralph We all welcomed Ralph into our hearts and homes. My father and Uncle would frequent the goose camp and fish camp....and I took the trip to Russell Lake in 2007. All great memories that will never fade away.
Ralph was the first person I told of my new bride to be almost 9 years ago...we celebrated with Scotch. I tried to acquire a taste for it...but it just didn't work! .My wife Bonnie and sons Cody and Logan all were fond of Ralph.
....Thanks for the memories ol'pal.
You were trully the last of a breed of adventurer. You broke the mold Plaisted!
You were a good friend and you will always be there in our hearts!

Jackie, Derrick & Plaisted Family,
I recall, as a young child, your Father's/Grandfather's expedition to the north pole and all the excitement that surrounded it. Just read the article about him in the paper and he sounded like quite the pioneer. How blessed you are to have had him in your lives. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

To the Plaisted Family,
The entire Hoag family has lost a friend and kindred spirit, Ralph was a close friend with my father Jim, and I have fond memories fishing and hunting with Ralph at the Canadian outpost and on many South Dakota pheasant hunts. Ralph was a true pioneer. Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with you today.

Leslie and family, I'm sorry to read about your dad's passing. I remember him coming to our school, Ralph R. Reeder, in 5th grade, Mrs. Swenson's class, and talking about his travels. A TV crew was there to film him and you. It was very exciting back then. In reading the story in the paper today your dad sounded alot like my dad and the way they followed their dreams and passions. They are good dads to have.
