Larry Birleffi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 27, 2008.
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Larry Birleffi, a television and radio broadcaster known for more than 50 years as the "Voice of the Wyoming Cowboys," died Saturday. He was 90.

He died at Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne, son-in-law Phil Noble said.

Birleffi was the announcer for Wyoming football, basketball and other sports for 37 years and wrote a sports column for the (Cheyenne) Wyoming Tribune Eagle. He was manager and part owner of KFBC Radio in Cheyenne and did assignments for ABC Wide World of Sports.

"They just don't make them like that anymore," said Kevin McKinney, the color radio analyst for Wyoming sports the last 12 years. "A guy who was our eyes to Wyoming athletics for all those years. There wasn't any television, only Larry."

There was a moment of silence in Birleffi's honor before the Wyoming-Bowling Green football game Saturday.

Birleffi is survived by a sister, three daughters and two grandchildren. His wife, Lois, died in 2004.

Services are planned Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cheyenne.

Larry you were without doubt the Voice of the Cowboys during my time at UW in the late 60s. Always enjoyed your articles in the newspapers and listening to your play calls in the booth. You were missed after retiring and will be remembered by all Cowboys forever.

truly saddened by the passing of a legend of Wyoming football and basketball broadcasts. I had the great opportunity of meeting Larry after he broadcast a Wyoming-Utah basketball game. I was so fortunate to get his autograph on a Wyoming basketball media guide, that is one autograph I will always treasure. may god bless your family at this time of sadness. Now Larry is doing play by play for the heavenly angels. Rest in Peace Larry and thank you for the great broadcasts you did for the cowboys.

Oh Biffer,
How can you leave us now in our dark times. But hey, we've been through it before, haven't we? They are still "our" cowboys and cowgirls.
..Good man gone. There were many, many hours listening to your voice and words of wisdom.
To the family, our deepest condolences.
