Florence Wald Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 15, 2008.
HARTFORD, Conn. - Florence Wald, a former Yale nursing dean whose interest in compassionate care led her to launch the first U.S. hospice program, died Nov. 8. She was 91.

Wald's daughter, Shari Vogler, said Saturday that Wald died of natural causes at her Branford home.

Wald was dean of the Yale University School of Nursing in the 1960s when she updated its curriculum to include a stronger focus on comfort for dying patients and their families.

Wald's passion for hospice was sparked when she heard a lecture by the founder of St. Christopher's Hospice in London. She left Yale to study at that center but returned to organize Connecticut Hospice in 1974, widely accepted to be the first U.S. hospice program.

The hospice movement, which includes more than 3,200 programs nationwide, focuses on providing care for terminally ill patients and their families.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Wald, however she touched my life when I utilized Hospice care for my mother in California. I am now an active volunteer with our local Hospice and have received so much back from the families we have touched. I hope that her family has an idea of how far reaching her work has been and will continue to be.

My condolences go out to you all. Florence was a caring and motivated person who made a difference in many, many lives. Please find comfort in the words of our Heavenly Father when He says; "Just like a man whom his own mother keeps comforting, so I myself shall keep comforting you people." (Isaiah 66:13) Florence's life was a tribute to all that is good and noble and her contributions will continue to benefit so many.

Wald family,
You have our sincere sympathy on the death of your loved one. Florence Wald lived to be 91 years old which is called" special mightiness" in the scriptures, Psalm 90:10. She made a tremendous impact on society. Many families have benefited from the hospice program that is so caring and comforting to the seriously ill patients. In the near future, death will be done away with. Please read Rev. 21:4. God's words bring us comfort and give us hope.

My Condolences to the Wald amily:

Only God can send us an Angel in Human likeness. I hope your Mother had a wonderful life. Even in Death, she will continue comforting the sick & helping their families cope with caring for someone they love so dearly who is terminally ill.

I lost my Mother in 1999 from cancer. One our Hospice Nurses, Daryl, left her new born baby at 3am to come to our home to care for my Mother & us.

I know our Dear Lord has held a special place for you in his Kingdom.

Now rest peacefully knowing all the great you have done in your lifetime.

Thank you Mrs. Wald,

God Bless you & your Family.

To one GREAT nurse from a grateful nurse: It is nurses like Florence Wald who put the "care" in a caring profession. I am proud to be part of this profession that "gives birth" to nurses like Ms. Wald. Blessings, thoughts, and prayers to your family.

Florence, you were an angel sent from up above to help others and you surely fulfilled your mission. God Bless You. Hospice took wonderful care of my mother during her struggle with cancer in 1995. They were able to keep her comfortable and allow her to pass peacefully. I know how difficult it is to lose your mother. I still miss mine everyday.

To the Wald Family:

Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. As a true pioneer who put altruism into practice, Florence will be missed by many. The programs that she began have proven to be beneficial to so many families. The compassion she showed by helping others will never be forgotten.

May the God of all comfort help you cope with your loss. The holy bible provides so many promises for a beautiful future on a peaceful earth where the sting of death will be gone forever.

It is our sincere hope that you draw comfort and strength from the many promises regarding the Kingdom of God; one of which is to rid the earth of sickness, pain and sorrow.

I worked in healthcare for close to 15 years and was familiar with hospice for others but in the early part of 2007, my family and I experienced it first hand for my step-father whom we lost to lung cancer in April of 2007. Had it not been for the care and kindness of our hospice nurses and other staff I don't think we would have made it through that difficult time, especially the morning of his passing. My thoughts and prayers go out the the family Ms. Wald. My prayer is that you find comfort just as we did thanks to the service that was established by Flrence Wald.

Thank you Florence for all your hard work and compassion. You lit the way for hope, happiness, and dignity for the dying. My Dad was in CT hospice in Oct. this year for a few days before his passing. The staff was so caring towards my Dad and respectful and informative to all of us in the family. I just wanted to thank the woman who helped start it. Godspeed, Laura.

I happened to come across Florence's announcement of death while searching for something else. When I read about her actions, I could not help but to thank her family & friends for Florence's efforts for Hospice. My Mother passed away 5 months ago. 6 weeks before we called on Hospice to help. What a Godsend they were. I only wish I knew Florence before her passing so I could thank her personally. Blessings and prayers to all of you on your loss.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
