Living right here in the community and having just come home from Binghamton,I heard it on the Radio.
Turned on the television and said oh god.
I cannot imagine how much you miss your loved one that went before their time.I can only pray that time will heal your hearts and your family.

I was coming home from school when I tuned to CNN. I saw what had happened. I couldn't believe it was happening and what those people had to go through. It was one year ago today and it seems like it just happened yesterday. They are all in my prayers.

Those we love left us with gifts in the form of memories that no one can take away. They gave us wisdom that we can still recall, companionship when we were alone, comfort when we needed it, and memories of their laughter and smile that will live on in us forever.
Psalms 147:3- He is healing the broken-hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spots.

Hai H. Zhong was a friendly and hard-working resident of Kentucky Avenue in Endicott. She was one of the 13 people killed on Friday morning, April 3, at the American Civic Center in Binghamton, NY.
I knew this wonderful woman as “Helen” and she lived across the street from my parents, Carl and Rose.
She was eager to improve her English and was taking classes at the American Civic Association. My father would often watch TV shows, movies, and “educational” programs like “Wheel of Fortune” with Helen and members of her extended family and help them figure out what the phrases meant.
Her husband remained in China, while Helen and her daughter worked and went to school here in the states. Her daughter graduated from Union-Endicott High School, my old school, and is attending a university in upstate New York.
Helen’s brother-in-law owns a small business next door to my parent’s house that served as a base for Helen’s extended Chinese family members in Endicott. My father would hang out there and help translate documents, give him his take on politics and events in America, and occasionally watch the front desk. Joe and his wife have three sons and would be happy to see me and my two sons stop by when we visited may parents. Helen, was of course, devoted to Joe's kids, especially the little one; a bundle of pure energy, movement and joy.
Helen was a beautiful person, committed to her daughter and her families in Endicott and China. She would drive her daughter to college using a GPS to find her way there and back. Helen would take trips back to China in the summer for a couple of months. On her return Helen would bring over some Chinese ointments and other treatments for my mother to try out on one of her hands, crippled with arthritis. My mothers look of anticipation and hope when smearing that on her hand was priceless. I know it helped my mother by the shear power of the respect and love that Helen exhibited for my mother.
During the summer, among other things in her busy day, Helen would come over unannounced and mow my parent’s small grass yard. In the winter, before my 91 year old father could put on his coat in the morning and get out there with his snow shovel, she would beat him out there and shovel the sidewalk.
My parents, who were used to 70+ years of Italian and American food, and maybe had Chinese food a few times in their life prior to meeting up with Joe and Helen, were at first skeptical of the homemade Chinese food that they were often given. But it did not take long before they became captivated with Chinese food, and tea, and cookies, and candies, and snacks, and drinks, and a lot of other good stuff to eat.
The tragedy of Helen’s death is impossible to fully comprehend. That my family was privileged and fortunate to know Helen, a person from the other side of the world, for the time we did is a blessing and we miss her greatly.

BE STILL
Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day, be still like desert shrub.
Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.
If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I lived in Binghamton from 94 through 97 as a Ph.D. student at the Math. Department of Binghamton University. These years marked my life forever as a hard time of deep studies and also as a time for learning how to live in a other Country, in a nice and beautifull town, that I could not imagine would be the scene of such a tragedy. To the people of Binghamton affected by this, specially the family of my Brazilian colleague Almir Alves, my deepest simpathies.

A Reminiscence
YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.
May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.
Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;
To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

I am so shocked and sad - This is my hometown even though I have lived away from the area for the last 20+ years. I grew up here and to see something happen here is beyond words - My grandparents were immigrants and had such pride for the people and the opportunities that the area offered and still offers. My heartfelt sympathy and profound sadness to all of the famiies - we are all God's children and family no matter the race, religion, or color.

There are simply no words to express the profound sadness in our hearts. Too often, we are battered by the hard surfaces of human existance in our seemingly simple attempts at life and living. To the families: may you know peace again soon, and to the comunity: may your faith be restored and may you know that love does exist in the world,

To the Families, that lost, loved ones in this tradgedy, am so saddened, for all of you that have been directly with this loss, as well as the community as a whole. May God Bless everyone, It has always seemed to me that this region, was blessed, in that we have not had a lot of the nasty's of the world here and it has been a safer place to raise all of our children, no matter what our religion, or national origin. It hard to think it really has happened here. God Bless you all, know that the world is praying for your families.

How sad that the people who were victims in this tragedy were together trying to make a better life for others and for themselves. If anything, what this tradegy has taught us is that any day can be our last, and to love and cherish others, and to tell them so.. we may never have another opportunity to do so. Our thoughts and prayers to all of those affected by such an awful crime, and know that the community suffers the pain with you, and hopes for comfort in the days ahead..
