My daddy, Ronnie Rhodes, Grandpa Dusty and uncle Jeff on a boat in New York. This was a family trip me mom my dad and little brother took back in the 80´s. We stayed with Grandpa Dusty on Statin Island for a week. Had an absolutely wonderful time! Great memories. Grandpa was a man that was full of life! No doubt you were in for a treat when he was around! Was always making you laugh. Grandpas first kids were David Ronald "Ronnie" Rhodes and James Jr. uncle "Jim" I believe I was 14 yrs old when I first met their brother Jeff, which would be my uncle Jeff. Great guy! Enjoyed meeting him. Then there´s Aunt Halaine I´m sure I misspelled that..... sorry. I will never forget Grandpa Dusty. Loved him much!

In Montgomery, Al. They had a parade honoring "Dusty"
He was given a black and red Mercury automobile to use by Tom Barnes Motor Company.
I was a 10 year old and played for a Little League team sponcered by The motor co.
After the parade the team was invited to the dealership to meet Dusty.
He offered to give a friend and me a ride home in his new Mercury.
This was a great thrill for both my friend and me to be sitting beside the Hero and MVP of the World Series.
Dusty was very friendly to us as he drove us home that Saturday.
Thank you Dusty for shearing this small part of your life with two 10 year old boys.
RIP Dusty
For all I have read, you were a person that I would have like to have known as a friend.

Today, many years after his death I spoke to someone with the same name. Out of curiosity, I looked up Dusty and learned he had passed. I was a young man living in London Terrace Gardens on 23rd between 9th and 10th and knew Jeff and Helene (Dusty) and remembered a nice family, a down to earth former big leaguer who took time to answer the questions of a then 12 or 13 year old boy. Dusty taught me to always take time to listen. God Bless his family and Jeff and Dusty, my deepest condolences.

My deepest condolensces to the Rhodes family. I was Jeff's first wife, Nancy and I remember how neat Dusty was to hang out with. He had a great sense of humor and loved his children a great deal. He thought the world of Jeff. The last time I saw him was at his home in Staten Island where Jeff and I rode our bikes to from Manhatten. My blessings to all of you. I pray his grandchildren were able to know him and see the good in him.

I never knew Dusty personally. I was a 13-year old kid playing Little League (LL) baseball in 1954 in Massachusetts. My mother took my sister and me to New York City that November of 1954 to celebrate my becoming a teenager. In that short time, I had already picked up the nickname "Dusty" because I was doing in LL what Dusty had done to the Indians. It so happens that my last name is Rhodes, too.
I remember well the 1954 World Series. When I told everybody I met in New York who I was (obviously not the famous Dusty), everything was given to me free. They could now "say" that Dusty Rhodes had slept in their hotel, or ridden in their taxi, or been in the Empire State Building elevator with them, or had had lunch with them. It was quite a visit for me.
In 1989, during the SF Giants series with the Oakland As, I struck up a conversation with a gentleman who was about my age and also remembered the 1954 World Series. When I introduced myself, he asked me for an autograph, which I freely gave. He then called several of his friends over to meet Dusty Rhodes and to get autographs. At the end of the evening, I 'fessed up, not wanting them to think that my signature had anything like the value that Lamar "Dusty" Rhodes's signature would have.
I am sad to hear of Dusty's passing. While I continue to carry his nickname and to tell his baseball story, I can't do autographs, anymore.
Goodbye Dusty. I salute you on your last home run.

I knew Dusty Rhodes as a young girl growing up in New York City. I was a classmate of his son Jeffrey L. Rhodes and a friend with his daughter, Helene Rhodes.(Dusty)
He was always a very nice man and would make me laugh. He gave my mother the nickname Rosie Baby and would make her laugh so often. My parents would enjoy his company when he came to my home to visit from time to time.
I got to speak with him on the phone about six months before he died. He sounded the same as I remembered him as a young girl. Even in his old age and sick he had me laughing telling me a joke.
Dusty Rhodes loved his son Jeffrey and his daughter Helene and loved his son Jeffrey's children, all five of them and his daughter's son.
When I was speaking with him on the phone he asked me what I thought of all his grandchildren, especially, his Elizabeth being she was the only girl. His voice sounded proud to be their grandfather.
He will be missed and never will he be forgotten.
Say hello to Jack and Rosie Baby when you see them Dusty!
Jeffrey, Helene, Mimi and Dusty's wife Gloria and all family members throughout the USA and to the many fans as well, may you all find comfort in knowing he suffers no longer and is in a better place now resting peacefully.

Gloria and family, my deepest sympathy and love to each of you. I'm glad Dusty was able to come to his brother Fred's funeral in 1987. I sure wish we could have lived closer and could of seen each other more often. Fred spoke of him a lot and loved his brother very much. May you find comfort in the Lord and know he is in a better place. Love to you all, Kathryn Rhodes

My condolences to the Rhodes family. Dusty was one of our baseball heroes. What great names for the Tacoma Giants in the early 60's: Manny Mota, Gil Garrido, Tom Haller, Willie McCovey, Juan Marichal, Matty and Jesus Alou and Dusty Rhodes. We listened to the games on the radio from small towns in Southwest Washington and could visualize the fog rolling in to Cheney stadium and Dusty hitting one out of sight into the night air. We became those players when we played sandlot as 9 and 10 year olds. Thanks for the memories.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Dusty Rhodes for the loss their loved one. Take comfort in knowing that your tears do not go unnoticed by our Heavenly Father. Although the deep pain you are experiencing will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. At Psalm 147:3, The Bible assures us God is healing the brokenhearted ones and is binding up their painful spots.

My sincere condolences on the passing of my good friend, Dusty Rhodes. He and I were teammates in '50 at Rock Hill South Carolina. We then were teammates the next 2 years at Des Moines, Iowa. Dusty was a great hitter. In Rock Hill, right field fans would "pass the hat" when Dusty hit a homerun. One or two innings later, Dusty would return with a back pocket full of money! We all thought he made more money with "passing the hat" than with salary.
I later played against Dusty when he was with the Giants, and I was with the Chicago Cubs.
He was just as special off the field, as he was on.
May you Rest in Peace, my Friend.
sincerely,

My dad, Fred Rhodes, talked about Dusty all the time. It was fun to see him on a TV talk show........we felt like we knew a movie star! My son wrote him a letter to let him know he was also playing baseball and Dusty graciously called him at least once a month and sent him pictures and a baseball signed. He was thrilled! Thanks for bringing joy to a young boys life. May you rest in peace in the arms of our savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. Love, your neice, Cheryl Elaine (Rhodes) De Los Santos

I was too young to remember Dusty's heroics in the 1954 World Series. I knew Dusty during the last 3 years of his career with the Tacoma Giants. My father would take me to games and say "That's Dusty Rhodes." he's a true baseball legend. To all of us young fans, Dusty was a hero and the leader of the Giants. Someone we all looked up to. He always had time for an autograph and a kind word for the kids. I consider myself lucky to have seen him play. One of the greats who will always be remembered.

I remember listening to the Giants on the radio and Russ Hodges announcing a pinch hitter in the late innings. A veteran player who had been around for quite awhile had rejoined the team was now batting. How I hoped for a hit and victory. I hung onto every word and then it happened, Dusty came through with a pinch hit homerun. My how that was burned into my memory.

I will never forget what Dusty Rhodes did to the Indians in 1954. I grew up in Washington, DC and was a Yankee hater. When the Indians made it to the Series I was delighted to root for someone who had beaten the Yankees. The Giants' pitching silenced the heavily favored Indians' bats (except for Vic Wertz--his fly to center Mays so famously caught) and then Dusty had a "Series of a Lifetime" with his unbelievable clutch pinch hitting. No one I can recall has ever had a Series with so many clutch hits except possibly George Brett. Thanks, Dusty, for the memories, even though I suffered at the time.
