For Kate...your singing warmed
the hearts of so many.
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

My wife, 2 kids in their 20's and I saw Kate & Anna at the Barrymore in Madison, Wisconsin--it truly was an event and moved our entire family. I had the incredible good fortune to see Kate McGarrigle perform with Rufus and Martha at Radio City Music Hall in 2008, something I had hoped for since I first saw Rufus and Martha in May of 2002 at the Vogue Theatre in Indianapolis. As a survivor of breast cancer (2004), I so respected and admired how brightly Kate indeed did burn in the last years of her life. Rufus, Martha, Anna, all of you have been so generous to share your experiences of Kate's last days on earth. It felt as if you acknowledged that to some extent you had already invited us into your family long ago. Rufus has changed my life for the better, not only through his incredible music and shows, but through the people I have met. All my love and deepest sympathies go out to Rufus, Martha, Anna, and all those who were lucky enough to call Kate McGarrigle their friend.

A truly wonderful soul has passed through our world, unique, feisty, true to her roots, a remarkable talent to be reckoned with. For all who have loved her, her spirit and music will live on and continue to grace our lives. Deepest condolences to her family.

From Bruges, Belgium,
I am mourning for more than a week and the mourning doesn't stop. You know: I grew up with the McGarriglesound and their musical heritage will never leave me. I was preveliged to see the sisters here in Bruges some 10 years ago and last year Martha came to my backyard for singing BMFAH. What a tiny little world we are living in!!!!

Deepest sympathies to Kate's family.
Kate and Anna, and recently her children have added so much depth to the music of our lives..and with that so much love. Kate did life as well as anyone could..she was a real "mensch" in all the best ways....a great human being. The McGarrigle's music will remain a part of my life until my song is over. May her family and loved ones find comfort.

My deepest Condolences to the McGarrigle's family. I can imagine the pain you all may be feeling with the death of Kate. What I find comforting and I know you will too, is knowing that death is not the end. God has promise that one day all that are in his memory will come back to life. That point is made at John 5:28, 29, where Jesus said: “Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.” This means that all the dead in Sheol or the grave, our loved ones included, will come back to life.
Also, Acts 24:15 echo's a similar thought which says "I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. So even “the unrighteous,” many individuals who did not know and serve God, will get a future opportunity to gain God’s favor. So this is the hope the Bible hold out for our dead loved ones. I truly hope this was comforting to you and your family. This raised a question, where are our loved ones going to be resurrected to? Another topic for another time. In the mean time take care of yourselves.

Isn't it odd how the death of someone you don't know personally can affect you so deeply? I think that says it all about the music of Kate McGarrigle. With her sister Anna they have produced some of the finest songs in recent years. Their mix of instruments blended superbly with their soaring harmonies. If you haven't done it yet then can I suggest you do whatever it takes to get a copy of "Heart like a wheel", turn the volume up and the lights down. I defy you not to feel the goosebumps as this intimately powerful song sweeps over you.
I had the rare privilege of briefly meeting Kate when she played with Martha in Liverpool in 2008. Wrapped up against the very cold winter night she took time to say hello.
A beautiful lady

I first heard the McGarrigle's incredible harmonies when I was living in Albuquerque. Bought their first self-titled album from a record store there, and have been an avid fan and listener ever since. Kate McGarrigle will be missed.

"Wouldn’t it be nice to walk together
Baring our souls while wearing out the leather
We could talk shop, harmonize a song

Monumental contribution to world music.
Without the music of the McGarrigle sisters, in retrospect, the music of their times, would have been repetitive and almost bland.
Thank you Kate. And Anna.

Dear Anna,
My heart goes out to you right now. Even though I left Montreal in 82 to move to Ottawa, the two of you were always part of the Montreal I loved so much. I have such fond memories of knowing you both back in TMR. I last saw Kate buying groceries before I moved. She was still so down to earth in spite of her fame. Her inner beauty shone. May the words of praise for the magic you both created help you heal through this most difficult time. Thanks for the music that will always live on.

I was so sad to hear of the death of Kate McGarrigle. I have seen her several times on stage with her Son, Rufus, and have been enchanted by her warmth and humour. The last time I saw her, was at the Royal Albert Hall in December, with her family. None of us could have guessed how ill she was at that time.
My heart goes out to Rufus, martha, and her entire family. She was such an inspiration to them. Their loss is immense, but I'm sure Kate is watching over them all. I hope they can feel her presence. Her music and memory will live on, and we, her fans, will enjoy it, and remember her for a long time. A light has gone out in the world.

What beautiful sisters creating such gorgeous music over the years. The Roche sisters also come to mind with such naturally beautiful harmonies and deep thoughts. I wore out my cd of Heartbeats Accelerating while my children grew up. They loved many of the songs as my husband and I did. Your daughter Martha sang beautifully in French and English when I saw her at Zoellner Auditorium a few years ago. Rufus is a great talent. I saw him on a special on Lance Loud's life, that was a blast from the American past, the first reality show for me was "An American Family". I hope your sister, children and loved ones can lighten the burden of loss when they hear your recordings and search their memories and find your beauty there. God Bless you all! I am a singer and really love singing her songs. Thank you Kate and Anna for such beautiful tunes and harmonies and memories of happy years with my young children. You live on through your songs. With much love from Darlene.

This is very sad new indeed. We once met Kate and Anna in Virginia, their concert was fabulous as always, and they graciously spent a few minutes chatting with us at the end. Kate was quite subdued until we mentioned we loved going to hear Martha and Rufus too - this lit her up! I have been going to McGarrigle concerts since the 70's, mostly in Ontario, and I am heartbroken to realize that I will not see Kate again. Our deepest sympathies to Anna and the McGarrigle and Wainwright families. Your music will continue to bring joy to all who hear it. Thank you for that.

On my first trip to Dublin in 1986, I dropped into McDaid's of O'Connell Street, the favourite haunt of Irish authors Brendan Behan and Patrick Kavanaugh. The place was loud and smoky, but then a Trinity College co-ed started singing "Heart Like a Wheel." I shut up. Everybody in the bar shut up. Everybody in the Club Bruxelles across the way shut up. It was the most beautiful a cappella rendition I'd ever heard of anything. For a brief moment, a magical bridge seemed to span the cities of Dublin and Montreal while everyone marvelled in silent awe.

Here in Montréal, it seems that January is already the cruellest month, and a singularly sunless one as well... My heart goes out to all of Kate's family and musical and personal friends. A huge loss, but also an amazing legacy, for our neighbourhood, for our city, for Canada and for the world.
I will always fondly remember the homey feel of their local performances, and most recently the stunning emotional impact of those ethereal harmonies in that last encore of "Mendocino" with Emmylou Harris and her band at the Théâtre St-Denis last October. Let "Sun, son, shining on the water" help us warm ourselves again and let's be inspired by Kate's full embrace of life. "I did not slow down. I was not afraid."

Dear McGarrigles, Wainwrights and family,
My sincere condolences on the loss of Kate. I have such fond memories of seeing Kate and Anna, live, at the Ottawa Folk Festival back in the late 70's and again several years ago. Mr. Millen, writing from Zurich hit the nail on the head - Kate was all those superlatives and most definitely a Canadian music icon. Kate and Anna's music, and especially there first album, will always hold a special place in my heart. "Talk to me of Mendocino" will always remind me of Kate & Anna's unique talents and gorgeous harmonies.

News of Kate's death reached me in Zurich Monday afternoon, in an e-mail from a friend in Canada. I knew she was seriously ill and sensed that her time might not be long. But still ... this sad news has me reeling.
As fate would have it, I was thinking of her yesterday morning while reading the rave review of daughter Martha's "Piaf" album in the Zurich daily newspaper I subscribe to.
Two performance memories of Kate and Anna come to mind: at the QE Theatre in Vancouver circa 1985 and at the Barbican in London in October 1996, at which Rufus and Martha both sang. I can still feel the glow of those occasions.
In vulnerable moments, their song "Jacques et Gilles" has reduced me to tears; it gets right to the essence of the expat experience.
Humble, sincere, superb songwriter, fluent in both languages ... she was my idea of the quintessential Canadian. She will live on through her music long after all of us are gone..

Anna, I am so saddened by your loss of Kate. Her passing is a loss even to those, like me, who for the last 40+ years have known you only through your music and through interviews. And, whenever I'd hear Rufus or Martha on CBC Radio, I'd imagine Kate's pride in their own accomplshments.
I've often told the story of Kate's unlikely attendance at her high school prom. Do you recall the stunning floral evening gown that she chose? Do you remember waiting with her on the driveway, anticipating her date's reaction to her astonishing makeover?
Kate was gorgeous, and so full of fun!
Years later, my father phoned me from Brussels, excited to report that he'd just heard the McGarrigles on The Armed Forces Radio from Germany!
Anna, you and Kate will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew you when...

My deepest condolences to the family. Kate and Anna's music is healing and angelic. Last night I dived into to my old Kate and Anna albums and I played Midnight Flight and there it was uncanny how Kate sung of taking her leave and I began to cry. She has taken her leave, don't know when she'll be back, but I hope we are re-united with this special soul who brought so much to this world. I had such high respect for her. I hope there are musical tributes to her in the coming year, she deserves the highest honours, she was a musical giant in my opinion. Love to her family.

Dear Anna,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Kate's passing. Even though I had'nt seen her in years, I considered her a close friend. I tried, several times, to get in touch with both of you through E-Mail, but it always came back with an invalid address. I hope this reaches you. I want you to know how really sorry I am. Hopefully, when you're up to it, you'll write me. I would love to hear from you.
Love,
Alan
