The Friends of History at Portland State University extends our deepest sympathy to the family of WSC in your time of sorrow. Our Endowed Lecture taking place on April 30 will be devoted to his grandfather and namesake, the World War II hero and leader. We will light a candle and have the audience observe a minute of silence to honor the life and achievements of his grandson, Winston, at the introduction of the program. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, always.

On the eve of the first Gulf War, I had the privilege to interview Mr. Churchill, who was the featured speaker at the Alabama Business Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. I was a young reporter from a small daily newspaper, but Mr. Churchill was gracious, taking time to provide insightful answers on the world situation. Such kindness from a distinguished member of one of the world's great families is a memory I will always cherish.
God's grace and peace to Mr. Churchill and his family.

For Winston...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

My deepest sympathy to the family. I know how hard it is to lose a dad young in life. The Bible in 1Corinthians 15:26 calls death, "Mankind's Enemy". That is so true. May you find comfort in knowing that "God is near to those who are broken at heart and to those crushed in spirit he saves".(Psalms 34:18) May the love and support of family, friends and God's Word get you though this most grievous time.
