Mary Ray Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 8, 2010.
WESTMORELAND, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire woman certified as the oldest person living in the United States has died.

Mary Josephine Ray died Sunday at a Westmoreland nursing home at 114 years and 294 days old.

Katherine Ray said Monday that her grandmother remained spry until about two weeks before her death.

"She just enjoyed life. She never thought of dying at all," Katherine Ray said. "She was planning for her birthday party."

Even with her recent decline, Ray managed an interview with a reporter last week, her granddaughter said.

The Gerontology Research Group says that until her death, Ray was the oldest person in the United States and the second-oldest in the world. She was also recorded as the oldest person ever to live in New Hampshire.

The oldest living American is Neva Morris, of Ames, Iowa, at 114 years, 216 days.

The oldest person in the world is Japan's Kama Chinen. She is 114 years, 301 days.

Ray was born May 17, 1895 in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island, Canada. She moved to the United States at age 3.

She lived for 60 years in Anson, Maine. She lived in Florida, Massachusetts and elsewhere in New Hampshire before she moved to Westmoreland in 2002 to be near her children.

Ray's husband, Walter, died in 1967. She is survived by two sons, eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

For Mary...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

To the family of Mary Josephine Ray,I'm so sorry for your loss, however, I know you take comfort in knowing she lived a long life!Another comforting reminder is what the bible says about our deceased loved ones, that one day we will be reunited with them on earth in perfect health.Psalm 37:29 says:"The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forver upon it".May the God of all comfort, comfort you at this time.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

After reading about this wonderful woman and imagining the life of love and experiences she has seen, I must say my mind has been changed about wanting to have a long life. Condolences don't seem right to give in her regard - but may her family know that they were indeed blessed to have her with them for so long.

March 11, 2010

The Bible said those that lived to 70 or 80 would have special might. Certainly this lady far exceeded the 80 year mark. To live until 114 was a big accomplishment. However, the Bible gives us a hope that one day, death will be done away with forever, Revelation 21:3,4. Then we will live FOREVER and never grow old.

To live one hundred fourteen years. Wow! Now that is what you called blessed. I do not know Mary J. Ray, just read about her in the paper. Her name will forever live in the mind of men. 114 years, what a history book. Rest on Mrs. Ray, you deserve your peace. I wish I could have known you, for I knew you had some old, old stores to share. I say to the family , the lady who lived to be 114" (Mary Josephone Ray) will never be forgotten.

To the Family and Friends of Mary Josephine Ray,

I am so sorry for the loss of such a family treasure like Mrs.Ray. At a time like this I hope the family will draw on the many warm memories she must have made over the years. I know she will be greatly missed by all.

In this difficult time may you all find a measure of peace at Psalms 34:18-"God is near to all those broken at heart..."

You can feel that Death can leave a heartache that nothing can heal, just know that Love can leave a memory that no one can steal.

P.S.-I loved the recent picture of her.

To the family of Mary Josephine Ray, WOW! To live to see 114 years is truly a blessing. I send to you my deepest sympathies during this time of sadness. I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Ms. Mary, however, it seemed she brought a lot of sunshine into your family. She appeared to be full of live right down to the day she closed her eyes in death. As it was mentioned Ms. Mary wasn't afraid of death and that's a comforting thought because death is the state of a deep sleep and soon those in the memorial tombs will hear Jesus voice and rise.-John 5:28,29. Under Jehovah God's Kingdom arrangement death will be brought to nothing, a condition of the past.-1 Corinthians 15:26 May God bless your family at this time with comfort and peace.

It is amazing to read about someone who lived for so long; I am reminded of the thought in the book of Psalm 90:10 "In themselves the days of our years are seventy years; And if because of special mightiness they are eighty years..."
What a mightiness she had to live beyond those years. May you be comforted by the so many wonderful memories shared with her.

God took one pair of angel wings
Two gentle loving hands,
Two eyes that only saw the good
A warm heart that understood,
A smile to encourage
A love that never ends...
He wrapped her up with tender care
And carried her home on the wings of his angel.

Warm Summer Sun

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.

To the Ray Family,
I didn't know Mrs. Ray, but what a wonderful memory of such a strong willed, loving person for God to bless this long on this Earth. Always remember her and never ever forget, She is history and made history with stories to tell everyone who will listen. God bless her and all of you.
Love one another and pray that God will bless you to live the life she already have.
